Mendham entered today's game undefeated at 10-0. What's more, their ace , Bob Parrish, was batting over .800. The game seemed to be out of hand by the second inning when Mendham opened a 6-0 lead with seeming ease. In the 2nd inning their five hits included two doubles and a home run. Fortunately for Summit Paul Krupa found his groove and allowed only 1 hit and 1 run over the final 5 innings. However, Summit was only able to muster a pair of runs through the first 6 innings. Summit began their final At Bat down 7-2.
Mike Nelson started the inning with a single and was followed by infield singles by Matt Williams and Matt Benedetti. With the bases loaded Ryan Carey was walked to force in the first run with no one out. Nick Monaco drove in a second run with another single, and now the tieing runs were on the bases. A single by Krupa drove in 2 runs and left runners on 1st and 2nd. The score was now 7-6. Could it possibly happen? Chris Kaiser laid down a nice sacrifice bunt to move the two runners into scoring position, one out. Steve Bariexca was walked intentionally to load the bases. After a strike out, Nelson came up to bat for the 2nd time in the inning. Two men were in scoring position but there were two outs. With the count 2 and 1, Nelson cracked his 4th single of the game to give Summit the lead 8-7.
Now Summit had to hold the Mendham juggernaut scoreless for one more inning. Krupa got the lead off batter to fly to center and Benedetti made a nice running catch, one out. The next batter was Parrish, the .800+ hitter. Krupa wasn't about to throw him anything good and walked him on 4 pitches. The next batter also walked so that the tieing run was in scoring position. Krupa got the next batter to pop up to Nelson and now there were two outs. Mendham's final batter hit a sharp ground ball to Carey at 3rd base. He fielded it nicely and tagged Parrish to preserve the victory.
WHAT A WEEK!
Note: A double header is scheduled with Weequahic on Wednesday, at Weequahic Park. Summit plays Johnson, at Johnson, on the following Saturday (5/5 @ 2PM) in the first round of the Union County Tournament.
