Wow!! If you missed this one you made a big mistake. For the first time a Summit Varsity squad defeated Mendham on their home court. Summit led from beginning to end as they out hustled and out shot Mendham. Summit took a 5 point lead after one quarter, led by Alex Sprinzen's 8 points. Sprinzen hit on his first 5 shots to get Summit off to a great start. A pair of 3-pointers by Dan Dugan and Ryan Carey were instrumental in helping Summit grow the lead to 8 points by half time. The 3rd quarter was played almost even and Summit started the final 8 minutes with a 7 point lead. On the opening possession Carey hit a FG to make it 39-30 and things were looking very rosy. But Mendham stepped up the defense and a few mistakes by Summit allowed Mendham to run off 8 straight points and suddenly it was a one point ball game. On the next possession Dugan drained a 3-pointer to calm the Summit fan's nerves. However, Mendham came right back with a deuce. Baskets by Carey and Lamar Freeman were followed by a Mendham FG and the score stood at 46-42 with about 1:30 left on the clock. Dugan hit the front end of a one-and-one and Mendham scored again to cut the lead to 3 points. But that turned out to be Mendham's last score. With 58 seconds left Freeman hit the first of six free throws that would complete the scoring and give the victory to Summit. Summit's scoring was led by Carey with 14, but overall the scoring was well distributed over the starting five. Sprinzen added 7 rebounds to his team leading total.
