|5th seeded Summit took on 12th seeded Rahway Saturday morning in great weather for baseball. Summit may have been looking ahead to a quarterfinal match against Westfield. However, it was clear from the start that Summit’s ace pitcher, Ben Lim, didn’t have his best game going. Rahway's 1st batter got on base via an error. That was followed by a double, a hit batter and a single, and Rahway was up 2-0. Summit picked up a run in the bottom of the 2nd, but Rahway scored again in the 3rd.so going into the 4 Rahway was up 3-1.
Rahway did real damage when they added 3 more runs in 4th with the help of two walks and an infield error. Midway through the inning Patrick Smolyn took over the pitching dutied. The half inning ended with Rahway leading 6-1. Summit closed the to 6-3 in the bottom of the 4th on singles by Matt Reddy, Justin Weiss, Greg Vlass and Matt Murdock.
Late in the 6th Snolyn walked three consecutive batter, to load the bases and Kunal Sengupta came on in relief. When the dust settled Rahway had a 8-3 lead. Summit had a great opportunity in the bottom of the 6th.. Rahway’s starter faltered. Walks to Reddy, Weiss was followed an RBI single by Vlass. Another walk to Murdock reloaded the bases.and Rahway went to a relief pitcher. The new pitcher walked Mutolo forcing in a second run. A fielder’s choice and a single by Schaffer got Summit to within one run. After hitting Miller a popup and and another out Summit came up one run short 8-7.
Summit had one more chance. With two out in the 7th, Murdock singled and moved into scoring position when Mutolo was walked.. Dougles Hit a shot to center that was tracked down to end the game and end Summit's Union County Tournament hopes.
