Summit went into this game expecting to win. After all West Essex hadn't won
a single game this year. In the first meeting Summit beat them handily. What
Summit didn't figure on was the incredible shooting of WE's guard Burns.
Burns had missed the first game, but even with his presence WE had been
winless. The game started as expected with Summit racing to a 16-9 lead.
Then things stumbled as Burns and Brogan combined for 16 second quarter
points with some unbelievable shooting to cut the lead to one. Not to worry,
Summit built it back to 10 as we started the 4th. But Burns just wouldn't let up.
John Foushee and then Bob Adams played aggressive defense on Burns. They
were in his face every second and in spite of their hard work Burns managed to
score 34 points in regulation as WE tied the game with only seconds to play.
After a Summit timeout there were 5 seconds on the clock. The inbounds was
to John Foushee who drove the baseline, put up a great effort which rolled
around the rim and then just hung there waiting to drop in for the win. To
Summit's disbelief it didn't, OT. In OT Burns continued to be hot adding 5
points but Chas Carey and John Foushee combined for 11 and Brendan Riley
added 2 to put the game away. Burns finished with 39 points in an absolutely
astounding performance.
