Anyone who decided not to make the trip to Mendham because they didn't
want to see the Hilltoppers blown out by the best team in the conference made
a big mistake. Summit came within a hair of knocking off the leaders. In fact
a freak event kept Summit from having a last second chance to win. With 6
seconds remaining Dan Johnson went to the foul line with the team down 3. If
he made both free throws Mendham would still be up one and have possession
of the ball. Coach Prendergast instructed Dan to make the first and then
intentionally miss the second in hopes a rebound could tie the score. Dan made
the first, and then literally threw the ball at the hoop (the rules required the
ball to hit the rim). It hit the rim but accidently bounced off the glass into the
hoop. He couldn't repeat that if he tried 100 times. Summit played great
defense with Bob Adams spending most of his energy containing Mendhams
high scoring guard Helbig to 13 points. When Bob got into a bit of foul trouble
John Foushee and Matt von Klemperer took over the task. Chas Carey had an
outstanding night and carried the offense with 19 points.
Summit needs a win in the next 3 games to make it to the state tournament.
