Caldwell entered the game at 10-10 and needed this victory to assure qualifying for the State Tournament. They chose to use their #1 pitcher, Jim Edwards, a southpaw. At first it appeared that Summit would have an easy time getting to Edwards. Summit's first at bat produced 3 runs. Matt Williams walked and Matt Benedetti doubled to score the 1st run. Benedetti scored when the outfielder mishandled Ryan Carey's single. After Carey stole 2nd and 3rd and Nick Monaco was walked, Paul Krupa singled to drive in Carey. Unfortunately, Edwards found his grove and allowed only 3 hits over the final 6 innings. Caldwell took a 5-3 lead after the 2nd inning and held that lead until the 5th inning. Summit's hopes rose in the top of the 5th inning when Benedetti started off the inning with a booming home run and Carey beat out a bunt single. However, that would be Summit's last hit of the game. Summit was plagued during the entire game by hitting sharp line drives that were hit right where a Caldwell fielder was positioned. |
