We will never know how much the residual pain from the blow Matt Williams received in the Parsippany game affected his pitching. But, one thing is clear. One of his hallmarks has been his ability to avoid putting runners on base through walks, averaging only 2 per game. Against Johnson 9 batters reached 1st base via 7 walks and 2 hit batters. Six of Johnson's 9 runs were scored by players who were walked or hit by the pitcher.

Johnson jumped to a 4-0 lead with a run in the 1st inning and 3 more in the 2nd. Summit cut the gap in half in the 4th inning. Singles by Matt Benedetti, Ryan Carey and Paul Krupa plus an RBI ground out by Nick Monaco resulted in 2 runs. Summit tied the game in the 5th inning when Steve Bariexca started the inning with a single and eventually stole 2nd and 3rd. Mike Nelson's single drove in Bariexca and Matt Williams helped his cause by singling to score Nelson. Unfortunately, Johnson regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the 5th inning. Summit tied the score again when Chris Kaiser was walked and Steve Bariexca tripled down the 1st base line. Johnson answered with 4 more runs in their part of the 6th inning to put the game away.

Summit's reocrd fell to 10-9. Summit must win at least 2 of next week's 4 games in order to qualify for the State Tournament.
