This is a game that shouldn't have been lost. Mt. Olive, who hadn't won a game so far this season, was down 2-1 with their last at bats in the 7th inning. The lead off hitter got on base when his ground ball was mishandled. Paul Krupa got the next batter to popup for the first out. Matt Williams made a fine running catch to get the second out. So now Mt. Olive was down to its last out. A base on balls put the next batter on. After going to a 3-2 count the next batter hit a ground ball that looked like the final out, but it was also mishandled and suddenly Mt. Olive had manufactured a run without getting a hit. In addition, there were still two runners on base and the top of the Mt. Olive order was at bat. The batter had a solid single to center but Matt Benedetti delivered a strike to home plate to nail the runner trying to score from second to end the inning. Summit went down meekly in the last of the 7th with two strikeouts and a popup to the 1st baseman, The Summit fans were getting a bad feeling and it turned out to be justified. In the top of the 8th inning Mt. Olive's leadoff hitter singled and the next batter put down a sacrifice bunt. Unfortunately the throw was off the mark at 1st and the runner was safe. Another sacrifice moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd. The next batter was intentionally walked to load the bases. A sharp single by the #6 batter brought home 2 runs and the half inning ended with Summit down 4-2. Summit went down 1-2-3 to end the game.

The game began happily when Ryan Carey opened things up with a single, stole 2nd base and came home on a single by Mike Nelson. A second run was added in the Summit second inning. The bases were loaded on a walk, an error and hit batter. Mike Mormak drove in the 2nd run with a sacrifice fly to center field. It looked good for getting more runs in the Summit 3rd after the bases were loaded with no outs. Williams' walk was followed by singles from Nelson and Benedetti. Nick Monaco struck out for the 1st out. Then Krupa hit a sharp ground ball that was grabbed by the pitcher and fired home for the start of a 1-2-3 double play. That was Summit's last scoring opportunity as they went hitless over the last five innings.

On the positive side, Krupa pitched a 6 hit 1 earned run game through the regulation 7 innings and really deserved to get a victory. Summit also turned two very nice double plays. A Mormak to Carey to Kaiser gem in the 3rd inning and another in the 4th inning when Williams ran down a shot to left field that looked like it was going to go as a hit. Williams rifled the ball to Mormak at 2nd to catch a runner off base.

Summit will play Millburn Saturday in the 11AM consolation game in the Millburn tournament
