This game got off to a great start. Summit forced a punt on Pequannock's first possession and took over on its 5 yard line. A pair of passes to Matt Benedetti yielded a first down on Summit's 30 yard line. Four plays later the ball was on the Pequannock 1 foot line. All four of those plays were runs by Mike Nelson, covering 70 yards. Nelson showed his toughness as he refused to be tackled and just ran over defenders. Keith Schroeder scored the TD on a QB sneak. Things continued to look good for Summit as on the next Pequannock possession they went they went "three and out". However, on Pequannock's next possession their strong running game began to kick in. After a Summit punt Pequannock took over on the Summit 47 and scored 6 plays later to take a 7-6 lead. Pequannock scored a 2nd time on a 5 play drive after recovering a fumble on the Summit's 40 yard line. The high winds took it toll on Summit's passing game. After completing all 5 of their 1st quarter passes going into the wind, they managed only 3 of 10 in the 2nd quarter with the wind at their back. On three occasions the wind carried the ball just beyond the hands of open receivers who might have gone all the way.

Pequannock opened a 21-6 gap early in the 2nd half as a result of a 61 yard / 11 play drive. All the 61 yards were gained on the ground. Pequannock scored again at the end of the 3rd quarter on 8 running play that covered 55 yards. The 4th quarter began with the score a very depressing 27-6. Spirits rose when Summit drove 69 yards in 8 plays with Matt Benedetti scoring on a 19 yard pass from Schroeder. Summit was back to within 2 TDs. But, hopes were dashed when Pequannock covered 70 yards in 3 plays to put the game away. At this point many of the Summit fans left for the exits. But those who did missed one of the greatest runs in recent memory. Summit's final possession started on their 35 yard line. After two incomplete passes, Schroeder hit Nelson with a screen pass and Nelson took it 65 yards for a TD. Along the way Mike faked out at least five would-be tacklers and broke at least 3 other tackles. Sheer determination carried the day. It was a joy to watch.
