The tone of this depressing game was set in the very first series when West Essex took the opening kickoff and ripped through the Summit defense for 80 yards in 6 plays. There was a glimmer of hope before the end of the 1st quarter when Summit recovered a fumble on the West essex 26 yard line. A key 16 yard run by Mike Nelson put the ball on the 1 yard line where Keith Schroeder took it in for the score. Nelson carried the ball into the end zone on the 2-point conversion try. Suddenly Summit found it self with an 8-7 lead. However, the light was quickly extinguished as the West Essex running machine grabbed yards in great bunches and ripped off four more TDs before the end of the first half. In fact, West Essex ran up 433 total yards rushing, for an average of 8.3 yards every time the ran the ball. The game was really over mid-way through the 2nd quarter.

Summit managed two more TDs, but were never really a threat to win the game. Summit scored after recovering a fumbled punt on the West Essex 25 yard line. An 11 yard run by Schroeder and an 11 yard pass to JP Coviello were key plays in the scoring drive. Mike Nelson covered the final 2 yards. The final Summit score came when Nick Monaco recovered a West Essex fumble and took the ball 55 yards for the score.

Summit's passing game suffered from an epidemic of dropped passes. Eight to ten passes that should have been caught were dropped. However, given the inability to slow down West Essex's running game, it is unlikely that the outcome would have been different even if most of these passes had been caught. West Essex entered the game with a 1-5 record so many were surprised at how strong they were. However, four of these five losses were to the four best teams in the conference (Mendham, Dover, Morris Hills and Hanover Park)
