The Summit bats had slumbered through the first two games of the season and the first 5 innings of this game before they really came alive. Summit had managed only 3 hits in the first 5 and 2/3 innings of the game and had fallen behind 4-0. With 2 out in the 6th inning, Paul Krupa ignited the rally with a triple. Nick Monaco was walked and Jeff Della Piazza smacked a home run to pull Summit to within 1 run. It didn't end there, Jeff Johnson delivered another triple and Evan Cheng singled to drive in the tieing run.
The score was still tied at the end of regulation play. Neither team scored in the 8th inning, but Summit added 4 more runs in the top of the 9th inning. Mike Mormak got things started by drawing a walk after one out. Kevin McNeil got on via an error by the 3rd baseman. Matt Williams beat out a single to load the bases and Steve Bariexca singled in 2 runs to put Summit on top. Krupa drove in another run with a single. The final run was scored on a beautifully executed suicide squeeze bunt by Monaco that scored Bariexca.
Krupa was the starting pitcher and he allowed only 2 earned runs off 4 hits in the 5 innings he pitched. The weather was very cold and windy, including an inning of snow, so Coach Dietz brought in Williams to pitch the final 2 innings. The assignment stretched to 4 innings, but Williams was up to the task. He pitched no-hit ball and allowed only one base runner. Krupa and Williams combined for a masterful 4 hit 9 inning game.
