Masterful is the only way to describe Matt Williams' pitching effort in this quarter-final State Tournament game. Williams allowed only 3 hits and a 1 walk, as he completely shut down the Hanover Park offense for the second time this season. Williams out pitched Hanover Park's ace, Cunningham (7-2 coming into this game), in every way.

Summit got its first run in the opening inning as Steve Bariexca started the game with a single. After one out, Williams was safe on an error by the catcher. Paul Krupa drove a solid hit to left center to score Bariexca. Williams, trying to score from 2nd base was called out at home on a very questionable call. Summit manufactured its 2nd run in the 4th inning. Paul Krupa hit a deep shot to center that probably would have been a triple had it not bounced over the fence for a ground rules double. Jeff Johnson laid down a splendid sacrifice bunt that moved Krupa to 3rd. Coach Dietz had a lot of confidence in Nick Monaco's ability to get down a good bunt and called for a suicide squeeze. Monaco did not disappoint as he put down a perfect bunt to allow the run to score. That was baseball at its finest. As it turned out that was all the runs Summit would need.

Although the defense made a pair of errors it also came through with some great plays too. For example, in the 4th inning Hanover Park started off with a single. The next batter rapped what looked like a sure single over 2nd base, but Mike Mormak went onto the hole, fielded the ball, stepped on 2nd and fired to 1st for a double play. In the 6th, a Hanover Park batter hit a sinking line drive that might have gone for extras bases if Kevin McNeil hadn't made a diving shoe string catch. In the final inning Hanover Park's cleanup hitter started the inning with a deep shot to center but Bariexca made a great catch to rob the hitter of extra bases.

Matt Williams improved his record to 7-3 with an ERA 2.37
