As is so often the case, the difference in the game was pitching and defense. Mendham slightly out hit Summit 6 to 5, but Matt Williams only walked one batter while Mendham's pitchers put 7 men on base by a combination of walks or being hit by the pitcher. On the defense side, Summit made only one error to Mendham's four.

Mendham got an unearned run in the 1st inning on Summit's lone error and a single. Summit took a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning. Williams and Steve Bariexca had back-to-back singles to start the inning. Williams scored when the 2nd baseman let a Paul Krupa ground ball go through his legs. Jeff Della Piazza's one out single drove in Bariexca. Williams scored another run in the 4th inning when he was walked and went to 2nd on a fielder's choice. He subsequently scored on an error by the 1st baseman. Mendham closed the gap to 1 run in the 6th inning but Summit got the run back in their half of the 6th inning. Williams started the inning by being hit by the pitcher. He stole second to get into scoring position. Following 2 outs, Nick Monaco drove in Williams with a big double to right center.

Williams' record in now 4-1 with an ERA of 2.33
