The day was overcast and more than half of the innings were played in drizzle or serious rain. That didn't deter Steve Bariexca from pitching a fine 6 hit victory over Mendham. After a somewhat shaky start in the first inning he found his grove. Mendham picked a run in the first inning off a walk and two singles, but Summit came back with 4 runs in the second. Jeff Della Piazza was walked to start the inning and Jeff Johnson was safe on a error. Mike Mormak singled to drive in one run. After 2 outs, Matt Williams drew another error and Steve Bariexca helped his cause with run scoring single. Mendham added 2 runs in the 3rd inning on a bit of a freak play. The leadoff hitter was walked and scored on as single when a good throw to 3rd base hit something and bounced high out of play allowing every one to score. Mendham tied the score with an unearned run that resulted form a pair of Summit errors. Summit scored the winning runs in the 6th inning as Della Piazza and Johnson started things off with back-to-back singles. Mormak drew an error to load the bases. Evan Cheng drove in one run with a fielder's choice and Williams brought in the 2nd with a sacrifice fly.
Mendham threatened in the 9th inning. Their leadoff hitter got on base on a error but Della Piazza hauled in a well hit fly ball for out number one. The next batter singled to move one runner into scoring position. Fortunately, Williams made a great running catch of a shot that might have gone for extra bases. The tension mounted when the next batter walked to load the bases, but Williams finished things off with another fine catch of a hard hit fly ball.
