Morris Hills had opened its season with a 5-0 shutout of Mendham to make it clear they would be a force to be reckoned with in the Iron Hills conference. They managed to best Summit by a single run in a very well played game. Steve Bariexca pitched an excellent game that was much better than his stats might indicated. For starters, Morris Hills began the game by beating out a slow roller to Evan Cheng who fielded it cleanly but didn't get the call at 1st base. The next batter got a clean single and the 3rd batter laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that stopped dead on the new infield grass and the runner was safe at first. So the bases were loaded and no one was out with the cleanup hitter coming to the plate. Bariexca rose to occasion by striking out the #4 & #5 batters and getting the #6 batter to fly out to center. Although 10 hits were eventually charged to Bariexca, only 4 of them were tagged with real authority.

Summit took a 2 run lead in the 2nd inning when Morris Hills' Rice lost the plate for a while. Jeff Della Piazza struck a one out double for Summit's first base runner of the game. That was followed by walks to Jeff Johnson, Mike Mormak, Ben Torres and Matt Williams that forced in the runs. Morris Hill tied it up in the top of the 3rd with 3 singles. Morris Hills got the winning run in the 5th inning off a pair of Texas league singles. Summit's best opportunity to take the lead came in the bottom of the 3rd. Paul Krupa and Nick Monaco started the inning with back-to-back singles and Della Piazza moved them into scoring position with a fine sacrifice bunt. Unfortunately, a line drive to the 2nd baseman and a strike out killed the threat.

Both teams played errorless, and mistake free, baseball. Although the score was not to Summit's liking the high quality of defensive play was an excellent harbinger for the future. Summit hasn't yet unleashed its power at the plate. In fact, all 21 outs were made in the infield.
