This couldn't have been more heartbreaking. Matt Williams got the start and pitched superbly. Through the first 6 innings he held the vaunted Pequannock (23-3) to 2 hits and a walk. Summit carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th. Unfortunately for Summit and Williams the first two batters hit routine ground balls that should have brought 2 outs but errors resulted in runners at 1st and second and no one out. Williams kept his cool and got the next batter to strike out. The next Pequannock batter hit a fly ball to center for the second out. Maybe he could pitch his way out of the jam after all. With a 1-1 count Williams was within 2 strikes of victory, but the batter cracked Pequannock's 3rd hit of the game to score 2 runs and end the game.

Summit got its run in the first inning as Jeff Della Piazza got a one out single, Williams hit into a fielder's choice and was brought home by Paul Krupa's hit.

Williams was outstanding in every way. For the first 6 innings Williams faced only 20 batters, that is only 2 more than the absolute minimum possible. Over the two Group 2 tournament games (Hanover Park and Pequannock) Williams gave up only 6 total hits and zero earned runs. You can't get any better than that.

Williams' record 7-4 with ERA of only 2.15
