Our nemesis, Mendham, did it again. For most of the 1st half Summit held the upper hand. Mid way into the 2nd quarter Summit was up 17-14 on some strong defense, 9 points from Dan Dugan and 6 from Alex Sprinzen. A 3-pointer by Mendham tied the score and that is how it stood with about 90 seconds left in the half. Unfortunately, some helter skelter play by Summit allowed Mendham's disciplined offence to run off the final 7 points in that short interval.
Mendham continued to have the momentum in the 3rd quarter and built a seemingly insurmountable 42-27 lead starting the 4th quarter. To Summit's credit the team never gave up. Summit scrapped for every ball and finally found its 3 point game. Dugan hit 3 threes, Dwyane Reid had a pair and Sprinzen had one. Of course, after each score Summit was forced to foul and Mendham was too good as they made 12 of their 16 foul shots. Slowly Summit chipped away at the lead and following Dugan's last 3-pointer the gap had been closed to 6 points (57-51), but time ran out.
When we play at Mendham it always seems like an uphill battle with the refs. By the end of the 3rd quarter Mendham had been to the foul line 19 times while Summit had been to the strip only 5 times. There were, of course, a lot of intentional Summit fouls in the 4th quarter and when the dust cleared Mendham had scored on 23 of 35 Attempts. By contrast, Summit hit 6 of their 7 tries.
