This game was the epitome of the term "titanic struggle." The game was delayed for over a hour because a referee was missing, but it was sure worth the wait. The gym was almost full and the tension great.
Summit grabbed a 17-13 lead in the 1st quarter led by Dan Dugan's 9 points. He scored on his first four shots. Mendham roared back in the 2nd quarter, holding Summit to a single FG and a pair of free throws. Mendham left the court at half-time holding a slim 2 point lead.
Summit rallied to tie the game at 27 all and again at 29. Mendham ran off the next 6 points before a pair of free throws by Tony Johnson ended the quarter with Mendham on top 35-41. In the first 3 quarters Summit had been 0 for 10 from 3-point range but in the final stanza Summit found its 3 point game. Threes by Johnson, Matt Audibert and Dugan gave Summit its first lead (41-40) since early in the 2nd quarter. Mendham retook the lead at 42-41 with 3 minutes remaining. After a Summit turnover, Mendham got an uncontested layup on an inbounds breakaway. That was really a crushing moment. Two free throws built the Mendham lead to 5 points before Alex Sprinzen drained a 3 pointer to bring Summit within two again. With 28 seconds on the clock Mendham missed the front end of a one-and-one and Summit got one more chance to tie the game. After a foul, Summit went to the line with 17 seconds left and a chance to tie the game but missed the front end of the one-and-one. Summit was forced to foul and Mendham managed to make enough FTs to put the game out of reach. Summit's final score came on a spectacular 3 point shot at the buzzer by Johnson from way beyond the center line. It was a very exciting game that unfortunately ended badly for the Summit faithful. But there wasn't anyone who didn't think they got their money's worth.
