High winds, 40 degrees and no sun may have contributed to the sloppy play which, unofficially, resulted in 13 errors. Fortunately, Dover had 8 of those errors.
Steve Bariexca was the starting pitcher and the plan was to limit him to 4 innings so that he would be available for a few innings in Saturday's Union County game, if needed. Bariexca pitched 4 excellent innings before turning things over to Eric Smith. Summit held a 12-1 lead entering the bottom of the 5th inning.
The five freezing Summit fans were hoping the 10 run rule would mercifully end things after 5 innings. However, Smith ran into a rough patch where he went to 3-2 on 4 consecutive batters and ultimately walked them. Add in 5 hits and a pair of errors and Dover scored 7 runs to make it a 12-8 game. Smith found a better groove in the 6th inning as he struck out the first two batters before a pair of hits put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Another strike out ended the threat. In Summit's 7th inning Zack Barber started a 2 out rally with a solid single. Ryan Mahoney doubled to score Barber and scored on an error that followed Kevin McNeil's single. Back to back singles by Bariexca and Jeff Johnson brought in 2 more runs to give Smith a 7 run cushion for the 7th inning. A pair of Summit errors contributed to Dover's 3 unearned runs in the final inning. While Smith struggled at times he wound up striking out 5 batters in the 3 innings he pitched.
There were a couple of notable batting events. Zach Barber broke out of a batting slump to go 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. Bryan Lawton, who hadn't had an at bat all season until his pinch hit single in the Weequahic game, had a single and a double, plus 2 RBIs. He has now had 6 hits in 13 at bats and batted in the 6th position.
