With two outs in the top of the 2nd inning, a Summit error opened the floodgates for Hanover Park. Six consecutive hits resulted in 6 unearned runs. DJ Cunningham's smash in the left field gap would have resulted in even more runs. The runner on first was across the plate and Cunningham was headed for third when the ball rolled under the fence for a ground rules double and the runner had to return to third. At the time that one run didn't seem to matter much since a six-run lead seemed almost insurmountable. However Eric Smith held Hanover Park scoreless over the final 5 innings and Summit rallied with 2 runs in the 4th and 3 more in the 6th to almost pull the game out.
In the 4th inning Zach Barber's single drove in Jeff Della Piazza and Paul Krupa, who had reached base on singles. The Summit bats suddenly came alive in the sixth inning. After a single by Steve Bariexca and a walk to Della Piazza, Krupa's single drove in one run. Brad Dolny's single drove in a second run. Bryan Lawton followed an out with a single, driving in the third run. Noah Landau singled to load the bases. Coach Dietz then called for his favorite, the suicide squeeze. Unfortunately the bunter missed the ball and Barber, on third, was out in a run down. The next batter was out on a fielder's choice, ending the rally. Summit went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.
Other than the horrors of the second inning, Eric Smith pitched no-hit ball throughout the other six innings.
Bariexca made a magnificent running catch of a line drive in the left field gap to end the fifth inning.
