Summit hung on to advance to the quarter-finals of the Union County Tournament. Kevin McNeil started the game off for Summit by being hit by the pitcher but was thrown out stealing 2nd. Steve Bariexca singled and Jeff Della Piazza was also hit by the pitcher. Jeff Johnson tripled to knock in 2 runs. Union Catholic picked up one run in the top of the 3rd inning to make it a 2-1 ball game. Summit made it 5-1 in 3rd inning with a 2 out 3 run rally. With 2 outs Paul Krupa doubled and went to 3rd on a wild pitch. Della Piazza was walked to put runners at 1st and 3rd. Jeff Johnson hit a sharp single to left that went through the fielder's legs and rolled all the way to the fence. Two runs scored and Johnson wound up on 3rd base. A wild pitch scored Johnson.

Union Catholic closed to 5-3 in their 5th inning with 2 unearned runs. Back to back singles put runners at 1st and 2nd. The runner from 2nd tried to steal 3rd and would have been out easily except the throw was wide of the mark and went into left. One run scored and left a runner on 3rd base. After a second strike out, a routine ground out was dropped at 1st and the 2nd run scored. Union Catholic threatened again in both the 6th and 7th innings. The 6th started off with a walk and a single. With runners at 1st and 3rd the runner at 1st tried to steal 2nd and was thrown out. Surprisingly, the runner at 3rd did not try to score on the throw to second. Bariexca took charge getting a pop up and a ground out to put out the fire. In the final inning Bariexca got the first out on an infiield ground ball. The next batter hit a sinking fly ball to center and Johnson made a spectacular diving catch, worthy of ESPN's SportsCenter. By this point Bariexca's pitch count had reached 114. He struggled with the next two batters and issued 2 consecutive walks. This brought up their designated hitter with the tieing run on base. But Bariexca rose to the occasion and struck him out on 3 pitches to seal the victory.
