This game turned into disaster in the late innings. Not only did Summit lose the game but, more importantly, they may have lost Jeff Johnson for the rest of the season. During a 5th inning rally Johnson took a hard hit in the leg by a West Essex fast ball. He eventually was able to go to 1st base with a bit of a limp. In scoring from 2nd base on a single by Paul Krupa he slid into home plate and was in serious pain on the ground. Play was stopped for more than 1/2 an hour while the Emergency First Aid squad was summoned and ministered to his needs. He was eventually placed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. It should be noted that Johnson's slide into home beat the throw and temporarily gave Summit the lead.

It was a seesaw game. West Essex took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd but Summit picked up 3 unearned runs in the 3rd inning. Two more West Essex runs in the 4th put them back on top by a run. The 5th inning rally gave Summit the lead 5-4. After the long delay in the cold nothing went right for Summit in the 6th and West Essex picked up 6 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks and 1 error.

Without Johnson in the pitching rotation (and his bat in the lineup) Summit has a real problem dealing with 5 games in the next 5 days.

West Essex's Ray Anderson allowed only 6 hit and 2 earned runs.
