After taking an early 19-12 lead, nothing seemed to go right. Passes went astray, there were too many turnovers, and shots failed to go down (we shot 33% for the night). Adding to our self inflicted wounds, Cranford's Grier, a sophomore, turned out to be unstoppable. He scored 36 points and dominated the game. His quickness allowed him to drive by the Summit defense almost at will. In spite of Summit's problems, we had numerous chances to win the game coming down the stretch. With about 4 minutes left in the game Grier put Cranford up by 8 (56-48) and it looked very bleak. Dwayne Reid responded with goal and Alex Sprinzen hit on 3 of 4 free throws to make it a 3 point game. A Grier hoop put the lead back to 5 points with 1:48 to play. Tony Johnson drained a pair of free throws and Dwayne Reid followed that with two more and Summit was back to within one point. Summit had two more chances to take the lead. On the first there was an amazing no-call by the refs on a Summit lay up that failed to drop. With time running down Grier had to be fouled and , uncharacteristically, he missed both shots. With 10 seconds left Summit grabbed the rebound and fired the ball down court on a 2 on 1 fast break. But a subsequent pass went wide of the mark and it was all over. Cranford scored the final two points on a desperation Summit foul. Sprinzen led Summit's scoring with 17 points and Wellington Smith had a "double-double" with 10 points and 11 rebounds. |
