Doubles: Dolny(1)
This was the first varsity start for Junior Dave Mell and he pitched a fine game. Mell may have had some 1st inning butterflies as he gave up a single, a double and a walk to the first three batters. But from that point on he settled in and allowed only 4 hits for the remainder of the game. The initial hits spotted Hanover Park one run. In the 3rd inning Hanover Park picked up an unearned run on a walk and error and a wild pitch. Summit made it a 2-1 game in the 4th inning when Jeff Della Piazza singled with one out and Brad Dolny drove him in with a double.

Summit took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 6th inning via 2 unearned runs. With one out Della Piazza walked. Dolny hit a ground ball to the shortstop and in his eagerness to start a possible double play the shortstop threw the ball into right field. That put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Zach Barber drove in Della Piazza with a ground ball to the second baseman and was safe when the defender threw wide to 1st base. Darren Apostolic then drove in Dolny with another ground ball. Unfortunately, Hanover Park led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to tie the game.

Summit went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th inning. The bottom of the 7th started with a walk to the first Hanover Park batter. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to 2nd. Another walk put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. At this point Hanover Park tried a very risky double steal and it worked. Now the winning run was on 3rd base and a deep fly ball would score the run. The cleanup hitter hit a ball to short left field, just what the doctor ordered. Unfortunately, the left fielder was positioned too deep and the shot dropped in for a single. Game over.

Summit has 5 games remaining in their season and must win 4 of the 5 to avoid a losing season. The plus side of the loss is that Mell showed he had the stuff to be effective in the starting rotation next year.
