Summit and Eric Smith finally got the kind of 7th inning support that had been missing as the team rallied for 4 runs for a come from behind victory. Summit struck first with a run in the 1st inning. Kevin McNeil led off with a single and scored on Jeff Johnson's double. A second run came in the 3rd inning. Again McNeil began the inning with a single and was sacrificed to 2nd on a nice bunt by Eric Smith. Johnson's fly ball to right center was in and out of the right fielder's glove to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Jeff Della Piazza was intentionally walked to load the bases. After a second out, Zach Barber drew a walk and forced in the run. Mendham scored twice, off 3 hits, in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the score at 2-2.

Mendham went ahead 3-2 in the 4th off a single, a stolen base and another single. In the top of the 5th Summit manufactured a run. After 1 out, Johnson got on base with a fielder's choice and stole 2nd. Della Piazza hit a ground ball and Johnson was trapped between 2nd and 3rd in a rundown. Assuming Johnson would be out Della Piazza took 2nd base. However, suddenly Johnson was forced back toward 2nd, so Della Piazza beat a hasty retreat all the way back to 1st. Miraculously, Johnson got back to 2nd without being tagged. That put runners at 1st and second with only one out. The next batter popped up for the second out. Barber hit a ground ball toward the second baseman that almost hit Della Piazza. The confusion caused the second baseman to boot the ball, and one run scored. So the score was tied 3-3.

In the bottom of the 6th Mendham broke the tie. Smith, who had only walked one batter through 5 innings, hit the lead off batter who was then sacrificed to 2nd. Then with 2 outs a single scored the go ahead run. So Summit started their last at bat down 4-3. After an initial out, Johnson hit a towering triple to right center field. Della Piazza drew his 3rd walk of the game and advanced to 2nd base on a wild pitch. Brad Dolny's single scored the tieing run and moved Della Piazza to 3rd. Barber hit a slow ground ball that was fielded by the pitcher. The pitcher looked Della Piazza back to 3rd, but waited so long that Barber was safe at 1st base. Now the bases were loaded. Darren Apostolic delivered a single that scored 2 runs. The final run scored on an error by the second baseman. That put Summit ahead 7-4. Mendham led off the bottom of the 7th with a single but Smith managed to get the next three batters to produce outs.

Summit has 5 games to play before the cutoff for the State Tournament on Friday, May 7th. Clearly Summit needs to win three of those 5 games to qualify.
