This was a game that should have been won handily. Summit held an 11-5 advantage in earned runs. Eric Smith pitched 8 innings and his pitch count reached a staggering 168. Matt D'Ecclessis pitched the final inning in relief and put the top of the Parsippany order down 1-2-3, with the help of a great play by Kyle Dobiszewski on the final out of the game. In spite of Smith's high pitch count he gave up only 2 earned runs over his final 6 innings. All this on a cold day with rain falling during the entire game.

Summit got things started by scoring 4 runs. Kevin McNeil walked to begin the game and was followed by an Eric Smith single. McNeil scored when Smith stole 2nd base and advanced to 3rd when the throw got away from the 2nd baseman. Jeff Johnson walked and a sacrifice fly by Jeff Della Piazza scored Smith. Back-to-back doubles by Kyle Dobiszewski and Darren Apostolic scored 2 more runs.

Parsippany's bottom half of the first inning was a harbinger of things to come. Back-to-back doubles with one out brought in a run. A throwing error on a routine ground ball led to a second run and put a runner in scoring position. After the next batter struck out, a routine popup, that would have been the 3rd out, dropped to the ground without being touched by a Summit glove and another run crossed the plate.

Summit went on a roll in the 2nd Tim Fields and McNeil drew walks to start the inning. Johnson drove in 3 runs with a towering homerun. Della Piazza was up next and followed with another huge homerun. The Summit fans couldn't remember the last time that had happened in Summit baseball. Apostolic got on via a fielder's choice and Zach Barber singled. Brad Dolny drove in both base runner with a deep single and the score stood at 10-3. Parsippany made it 10-5 in the bottom of the 2nd on a walk and a monster home run by their cleanup batter.

In the 3rd inning Parsippany replaced their pitcher and things settled into a pitching duel for the next 3 innings. However, it is worth noting that in the Parsippany 4th inning with a man on via an error the same cleanup batter hit a potential homerun shot to deep centerfield. Johnson got a good jump and caught the ball as he simultaneously ran into the fence.

In the top of the 6th inning Della Piazza launched another home run down the right field line. Not since Alfi Critelli did it against Chatham has a Summit player had 2 home runs in a game. Unfortunately, Parsippany scored twice in the bottom of the 6th aided by a pair of infield errors. Still there was a comfortable 11-7 lead with only 3 Parsippany outs remaining. To start the 7th inning Parsippany brought in a fastball pitcher in relief. Parsippany fans nearby said the pitcher is only used in relief because he can only last 2 or 3 innings. He really shut down the Summit offense allowing only 1 single and striking out 5 batters over the next 3 innings.

The bottom of the 7th began with an out to right field, the next batter walked. A sharp line drive caromed off Smith, knocking him down, and the runner was safe at first. The next batter walked to load the bases. This was followed by a routine ground ball. Instead of getting the easy 2nd out at first the fielder tried to get the runner going to 2nd and failed. One run scored and, instead of 2 out and 2 runners, the bases were loaded with only one out. The next batter popped up to the McNeil. One out to go and Summit is home free. Unfortunately, the next batter was the cleanup hitter who had almost hit 2 homeruns already. He did it again with a shot deep to center. Johnson raced back, but was only able to get the tip of his glove on the ball. The result, a double and 3 runs scored and a tie ball game at 11-11. That's the way it ended when darkness fell. The game will not be replayed and goes into the book as a tie.
