Summit needed to win this game if they were to qualify for the State baseball tournament. It is pretty tough to enter such a make or break game without four varsity players. Brad Dolny and Matt Zackoff were involved in advanced placement tests, Kevin McNeil was on crutches and Tim Fields was sick. Dolny was able to get to West Essex by the 5th inning, but by then the outcome was not really in doubt.

Over the first 3 innings Summit was held scoreless and hitless, while West Essex picked up a run in the 2nd and an unearned run in the 3rd. Things fell apart in the 4th as West Essex brought 14 batters to the plate. They scored 9 runs, 5 of them unearned, and took an 11-0 lead. Kyle Dobiszewski was brought in to get the last out of the 4th inning.

In the top of the 5th inning Summit faced the end of the game via the 10 run rule. Dobiszewski led off the inning and powered a home run shot to deep center field. The next two batter were out and West Essex still had a 10 run lead. This brought Bernie Grishman, up from the JVs to fill the roster gap, to the plate. After two strikes, Grishman stayed alive by fouling off 2 more pitches. On the next pitch he cracked a clean single to keep the game alive. Smith also singled and a wild pitch moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Jeff Johnson singled to drive in one run. The lead was now 9 runs and the game would go on. This brought up Jeff Della Piazza who proceeded to hit a huge shot over the left field fence to add 3 more runs.

West Essex went on to score 2 runs in their 5th and one more in the 6th. Summit scored their 6th run in the top of the 7th. Smith was walked after one out and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. Della Piazza drove Smith in with a double.
