This was an unusual game, to say the least. Summit lost two double digit leads and West Essex lost one. In the final analysis a major factor was a series of momentum killing penalties that Summit incurred. More about that later. The 1st quarter looked like it was going to be a cake walk for Summit. West Essex went 3 and out on their 1st possession and Summit took over on the Summit 35 yard line. On the first play Rob Schroeder hit a wide open Todd Kaiser for a 65 yard TD. As has been true all season, Will Gruetzmacher kicked the first of his 6 extra point. After an exchange of punts Summit wound up with the ball on the Summit 46 yard line. On the 2nd play of the series Schroeder connected with Dwayne Reid on a 49 yard pass that put the ball on the 1 yard line. Schroeder took it in from the 1 to put Summit ahead 14-0 as the quarter ended.

Things began to turn ugly early in the 2nd quarter. Summit took possession on the Summit 2 after a West Essex punt. A run and 2 incomplete passes failed to get the ball beyond the 5. On the 4th down punt the snap sailed over Jeff Della Piazza's head and out of the end zone for a safety. On the kick off (from the 20 yard line) Summit was off sides and had to re-kick from the 15. West Essex got great field position, returning the kick off to Summit's 31. On the next play West Essex completed a 31 yard TD pass. Suddenly the lead had been cut to 14-9 and the momentum had shifted to West Essex. West Essex again got the ball on their 22 yard line following a nice Della Piazza punt. After a 1st down at the 33, Summit stopped the run for a 3 yard loss and then sacked the QB for a 7 yard loss. But Summit suffered the first of many killer penalties as the Hilltoppers were called for roughing the passer. Instead of 3rd and very long West Essex had a 1st down and a new lease on life. This really got West Essex pumped up and the drove the remaining distance in 5 plays. The half ended with West Essex on top 17-14.

The 2nd half continued the agony. On the 1st possession Summit was forced to punt from their 11. Della Piazza got off a great 50 yard punt that ended up on the West Essex 39, but a holding penalty nullified the punt and forced a re-punt from the 6 yard line. This time West Essex returned the punt to Summit's 30 yard line. Seven running plays later West Essex scored to make it a 24-14 game. To Summit's credit they didn't fold. They took the next kick off and moved to a 1st down at the West Essex 45, behind the running of Della Piazza, Pierce Talbot, and Daryl Toney, plus a nice reception by Brad Dolny. On the next play Toney took a pitchout, but instead of sweeping the end threw a perfect strike to Kaiser to get Summit back in the game at 24-21. On West Essex's next possession they were forced to punt and Maurice Torres made a great effort and blocked the punt, giving Summit the ball on the 35 yard line. On the next play Toney took another pitchout from Schroeder, but this time he ran 35 yard for the go-ahead TD. Following the kick off, Pierce Talbot intercepted a WE pass and returned it to the WE 41. So the 4th quarter began with Summit back on top 28-24.

On the 1st play of the 4th quarter Schroeder combined with Dwayne Reid on a 37 yard TD pass. Summit was up35-24. Unfortunately, Penalties again reared their ugly heads. On the 1st play following the kick off, West Essex was thrown for a 5 yard loss but Summit was called for a incidental face mask penalty, a 5 yarder. However, a Summit player said something inappropriate to the referee and he tacked on another 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. Two plays later Summit was called for pass interference and West Essex was awarded the ball on Summit's 12 yard line. Two more plays and the score was 35-32. Summit got nowhere on its next possession and was forced to punt, with West Essex taking over on their 42 yard line. It took them only 5 plays to gain a 1st down on Summit's 5 yard line. The next play moved it to the 2, then to the 1. A penalty moved it back to the 5. Another run made it 4th and goal from the 2 but Summit held, taking over on downs at the 1 foot line.

At this point there were only 3 minutes left in the game and WE had only one time out left. A running play and two incomplete passes failed to produce a much needed 1st down and also only ran about 30 seconds off the clock. Summit was forced to punt from the 3. West Essex wound up with the ball at Summit's 27 yard line. With 4th and 8 from the Summit 15 West Essex went for a 32 yard field goal and made it to tie the game at 35-35.

In the 1st overtime WE scored a TD on their possession and Summit answered with their own TD on the combination of a 12 yard pass to Kaiser, an 8 yard run by Toney and Della Piazza covering the final 3 yards for the score. In the 2nd overtime Toney intercepted a 4th down pass in the end zone to shut down WE. Unfortunately, another 10 yard holding penalty put Summit behind the eight ball and the overtime ended with an interception. In the final overtime Summit started first and again was hit by a 10 yard holding penalty and failed to score. West Essex's attempt ended when Schroeder recovered the only fumble of the game on the 18 yard line.
