Two of Summit's turnovers resulted in West Essex getting the ball on Summit's 16 yard line and contributed 10 of their 16 points.
The 4th quarter was a study in frustration. Three times Summit drove inside the West Essex 30 Yard Line. The first 2 drives were ended by interceptions. The final drive ended with a field goal attempt with 8.5 seconds left in the game.
Summit dominated the overall statistics. In particular, Dwayne Reid had an incredible day as he hauled in 9 passes from Rob Schroeder for a amazing 270 yards.
Summit scored on its first possession as they went 73 yards in 7 plays. A 39 yard pass to Reid gave Summit a 1st down at the West Essex 30 Yard Line. Three plays later, Schroeder hit Jeff Della Piazza on a 24 yard screen pass and a TD. Will Gruetzmacher kicked the extra point and Summit was on top 7-0. West Essex was forced to punt on their next possession, without making a 1st down, and Summit had the ball again with good field position on the Summit 42 Yard Line. On the very next play West Essex intercepted a pass and returned the ball to Summit's 16 Yard Line. It took West Essex's D'urso only one play to tie the score and shock the Summit fans. Summit had a golden opportunity to score late in the 2nd quarter. After West Essex had missed a 42 yard field goal try, Summit got the ball on their 20 yard line. Two quick passes to Reid advanced the ball 42 and 33 yards respectively and gave Summit a 1st and goal from the 5 Yard Line. Della Piazza moved it to the 4 but a pitchout went wrong and lost 13 yards. A penalty pushed the ball back 5 more yards. A 3rd down run by Schroeder got back 11 yards and Schroeder hit Brad Dolny on 4th down and it looked for a second like Dolny might score. But he was pulled down on the 1 yard line.
Summit kicked off to start the 2nd half and on the first play West Essex got off a 63 yard run, its best of the game. That put the ball on the Summit 9 Yard Line. Three plays later West Essex scored. The PAT kick was no good but West Essex was on top 13-7. On West Essex's next possession West Essex drove into Summit territory but Reid ended the drive with an interception that ended up on Summit's 30 Yard Line. Two plays later Schroeder again connected with Reid for 61 yards and a touchdown. Summit was back on top 14-13. On the first play of Summit's next possession they coughed up the ball on the Summit 16 Yard Line. Three running play moved the ball to the 9 Yard Line and on 4th down West Essex kicked a 26 yard field goal to retake the lead 16-14.
As mentioned above, Summit's next two drives ended with interceptions. Summit got the ball for one last time with 56 seconds left in the game. Reid returned a punt to the West Essex 42 Yard Line. A pass to Reid put the ball on the 27 Yard Line. After an incomplete pass Schroeder again connected with Reid who did some fancy running to get to the 7 Yard Line. On the next play West Essex was called for pass interference and was penalized half the distance to the goal line. At this point there were 8.5 seconds left in the game and Summit had no time outs left. Time for one last play. The decision was to try for a 20 yard field goal attempt from the right hash mark. The playoffs hung in the balance. Unfortunately, the kick went wide of the goal posts and a great Summit football season came to an end.
