This victory clinched Summit's 1st Iron Hills Conference Championship. In fact, this is the first non-shared Conference championship that a Summit basketball team has won since 1980 in the days of the Suburban Conference. The team moves on to the the Group II tournament and meets Gov. Livingston at 7PM Monday (3/1) at home. It is always great to close out the season with a win, but this was a strange game. Summit started out very flat and seemingly out of sync. Late in the 1st quarter the game was tied 6-6 with a weak Dover squad. John Alpizar sounded a wake up call with 2 nice drives into the paint to score layups right at the end of the quarter.
The momentum carried into the next quarter. Wellington Smith, Dwayne Reid and Dwight Reid combined for all of Summit's 25 points in the 2nd quarter. Even though Dover outscored Summit in the 2nd half 34-28, the outcome was never seriously in doubt. In spite of the lopsided score, Summit never really seemed to have its act together. The situation wasn't helped by the officials who made a lot of strange calls. Fortunately, they were strange in an equal opportunity way. There were 40 fouls called but they were nicely split 20-20, so no one left feeling put upon.
Wellington Smith had a very big night scoring 26 points. The Reid twins each had 13 points.
