A Summit-Mendham basketball game is always exciting and this was no exception. The gym was full, all the students were standing and the noise level was deafening. The Summit fans were shocked when Dwayne Reid sat on the bench for the 1st quarter, apparently being disciplined for a team infraction. Without Reid Summit held its own with Mendham but fell behind 13-11 at the end of the 1st quarter. Reid came in to start the 2nd quarter with the aim of making up for lost time. His presence made a huge difference. The defense picked up the pace and Reid ran off 14 of Summit's total of 16 points in the quarter. The defense held Mendham to only 5 points and Summit held a 27-18 lead.
Reid continued to pile it one. He scored 9 of Summit's 10 point in the 3rd quarter. Reid got into some foul trouble in the 4th quarter and had to sit out about 4 minutes. In spite of that, he still scored 11 more points. Wellington Smith, who was double teamed every time he had the ball, still managed 11 points and 10 rebounds. Reid's 34 points were the most points scored in a game this season. That was remarkable since he played less than 3 quarters. Chris Dean had tough defensive task of guarding Mendham's ace, Rob Thomas. Dean, and the Summit defense held him scoreless for all of the 2nd & 3rd quarters and part of the 4th quarter.
