Before this game began it was pointed out that Parsippany Hills had beaten Weequahic early in the season. That put the Summit fans on edge as the game began. Parsippany Hills opened up with a tight zone defense and Summit was ineffective in penetrating the zone and was coming up dry on 3-point attempts. Finally Mike Dugan found the range with a 3 pointer. He followed it up with a field goal and a free throw to score 6 of Summit's 7 1st quarter points The 2nd quarter began with Summit down 8-7, but defensive pressure and Dwayne Reid's quick hands resulted in Reid scoring 8 quick points. Dugan and Wellington Smith each added 4 points and the half ended with Summit up 25-21. Not exactly a comfortable lead.
Things brightened in the 3rd quarter as Summit went on a 12-2 run with Reid leading the way with 8 points and the score stood at 37-23. At this point both Reid and Smith picked up their 3rd fouls and went to the bench. With them out of the game Parsippany Hills went on a 9-0 tear and suddenly it was only a 5 point game. When they returned to the game free throws by Dugan and Smith, plus a pair of 3-pointers by Reid put the lead at 13 with 4 minutes left. After John Alpizar and Smith scored field goals the lead was 15 (49-34) and it was all over but the shouting.
Reid led the scoring with 24 points. Dugan had a great game on both offense and defense as he scored 13 points and was instrumental in forcing numerous Par Hill turnovers. Smith had a "double-double" with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Parsippany Hills had a 15 person "pep band" in the gym and it added a "big game" atmosphere to the gym. It was a great addition. Many Summit fans wondered why Summit, with all its musical talent, hadn't ever included a pep band. What a great idea!
