Whenever Summit travels to Weequahic's small gym you can count on fireworks, and this was no exception. It was an exciting seesaw battle that ultimately was decided by performance at the foul line. Summit's foul shooting suffered a complete collapse in the closing minutes. Summit missed its final 8 free throws and Weequahic score a basket with 6 second left to steal the victory.
Summit started well and was up 2 points at the end of the 1st quarter. Weequahic took charge in the 2nd quarter as they stepped up the defensive pressure and picked up 10 points off fast breaks. They out scored Summit 21-12 in the quarter and were ahead by 7 points at the intermission. Summit needed someone to step forward in the 3rd quarter and Dwayne Reid was the that someone. He opened the 3rd quarter with a 3 pointer and proceeded to make 2 field goals off steals for 7 quick points and a tie ball game. Reid continued hot adding 7 more points in the quarter, leading to a 48-46 Summit lead entering the 4th quarter.
Weequahic tied the game at 48 before Reid regained the lead with a basket. Chris Conlon added field goal and Reid hit 2 free throws and the score was 54-48. Unfortunately, Weequahic ran off 6 point to tie the game again. Reid regained the lead with a basket and Mike Dugan scored a 3 pointer to make it a 5 point lead. Summit repeatedly went to the foul line to add to their lead, but came up empty every time. This allowed Weequahic to slowly chip away at the lead. In fact they ran off the next 7 points (including 4 consecutive free throws) and took a 2 point lead. Wellington Smith tied the game at 61-61 with less than a minute to play. Summit again came up dry on a pair of free throws and Weequahic scored the game winner with 6 seconds left.
Reid had a big night with 27 points and Smith scored a "double-double" with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
