Summit avenged its earlier loss to Westfield in the Kowal Tourney and advanced to the quarter finals of the Union County Tournament. Summit played great defense against a powerful Westfield team and took a 3 point lead at the half.

A 10-1 run by Summit, highlighted by 3-pointers by Wellington Smith and Dwayne Reid, gave Summit a 12 point lead in the 3rd quarter. At the 4:30 mark disaster seemed to strike as Dwayne Reid took a hard fall and left the game. Fortunately, he wasn't seriously injured but it was quite a scare. At 3:15 Dwayne was given a technical foul and Westfield made 3 of 4 free throws and got the ball. Momentum was shifting and Westfield had a 9-2 run of its own to make the score 33-28 in favor of Summit starting the 4th quarter.

Westfield's momentum continued to build and with less than 5 minutes to go Westfield took its first lead since early in the 2nd quarter. A pair of field goals built the Westfield lead to 5 points with only 2:51 left in the game. Everything was going wrong for Summit and things looked grim. However, on Summit's next possession Mike Dugan hit a beautiful 3 pointer that seemed to ignite Summit. Smith made a layup and was fouled. He sank the free throw and Summit was back on top. Then Dwayne Reid scored a fast break layup on a great feed from James Johnson. With 6 seconds left Dwayne Reid hit 2 free throws to ice the game for Summit. After being down by 5 with 2:51 to play Summit had scored 10 points while holding Westfield scoreless. What a comeback!!!

Wellington Smith had a great game with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Dwayne Reid and Mike Dugan (both with 13 points) were also in double digits. Summit will play again Saturday at Dunn Arena, probably against Elizabeth.
