Doubles: Furman(1) |
West Essex broke a 1-1 tie in the 5th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. Tim Fields pitched a fine game. Going into the 5th inning he had given up only 1 run on 3 hits through the 4 innings and needed only 45 pitches over that stretch. Unfortunately, a walk and back to back doubles gave West Essex an insurmountable lead. It was insurmountable because WE's southpaw ace, Matt Bicely, threw a 3 hitter and struck out 13 batters.
While the game was ultimately a loss there was many redeeming aspects. Tim Fields had his best outing of the year and there were some fine defensive stops, including line drive saves by Stoney Gibbons, Zach Barber and Sam Zerfoss.
Summit's only hits were a double by Andrew Furman and singles by Gibbons and Woody Shepherd.
