Summit's season didn't get off to the start that we had anticipated. The lead changed hands many times and with 1:53 left in the game a Summit TD made the score 27-26. Summit had a chance to tie the game and send it to overtime, but the extra point try went wide. Ultimately, it was Summit's inability to stop the Morris Hills running game that put the game in jeopardy.

Morris Hills got things off on the wrong foot for Summit by returning the opening kick off to the Summit 4 yard line. Two plays later they scored. Morris Hills went for a 2-point conversion, but the run failed. Summit took the ensuing kick off and moved 65 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown. The drive featured a 12 yard reception by Todd Kaiser and some powerful running by John Facchinei and gave Summit a 1st down on the Morris Hills 28 yard line. On 3rd and 8 Jacob Huck connected with James Johnson on a 26 yard pass to tie the score. The extra point failed, but Summit was back in the game. Early in the second quarter Summit's running game and defense suffered a blow when Facchinei was seriously injured and had to leave the game. He was never able to return and was on the sidelines with a crutch during the 2nd half.

Morris Hills regained the lead in the 2nd quarter after taking Summit's only punt of the day on their 48 yard line. Four running plays moved the ball to Summit's 26 where Morris Hills hit a wide open receiver for a touchdown. The extra point was good and they were up by 7 points. Summit threatened before the end of the half. Starting on the Summit 42 the Hilltoppers moved to a 1st down on the Morris Hills 15. The drive was powered by a pair of receptions by Johnson (9 yards and 14 yards), a catch by Kaiser (12 yards) and a pass to Pearce Talbot (4 yards). The drive ended in a strange way. On 3rd down from the Morris Hills 8 yard line a Huck pass in the end zone was incomplete and an early whistle blew ending the play. Subsequent to the whistle the ball was tipped by a defender and finally caught by Morris Hills. The pass was ruled an interception even though it occurred after the whistle had ended the play.

Summit came out in the 2nd half ready to turn things around. The Hilltoppers took the opening kickoff at their 27 yard line. Two passes to Johnson gave Summit a first down at the Morris Hills 22. On 2nd and 8 Huck hit Daryl Toney for a Touchdown. Will Gruetzmacher's extra point gave Summit a 13-13 tie. Summit forced Morris Hills to punt on their next series and began another drive from the Summit 44 yard line. Summit went the 56 yards in 14 plays powered by the running of Gruetzmacher and Huck. Toney took the ball in from the 4 yard line and Gruetzmacher's extra point gave Summit's its first lead of the game, 20-13.

Morris Hills didn't wait long to regain a tie. They took the next kickoff and marched 77 yards in 12 plays. 72 of those yards were by 11 rushing plays. Summit suffered a crucial turnover on the next series. Passes to Kaiser (12 yards) and Johnson (8 yards) made it 2nd and 2 on Summit's 43 yard line. A running played gained enough yardage for the 1st down but a fumble gave the ball to Morris Hills. A 45 yard pass play by Morris Hills moved the ball to Summit's 5 yard line and two plays later they scored to regain a 27-20 lead. Summit wasn't about to give up. Starting on the Summit 28 yard line three passes to Johnson and three scrambling runs by Huck gave Summit a 1st down on the Morris Hills 22 yard line. From there a pass to Toney put Summit within one point with 1:53 left in the game. Unfortunately the extra point was missed.

Johnson led all the receivers with 10 catches for 138 yard and Huck was the leading rusher, averaging over 6 yards for each of his 7 carries.
