This was the first of two very big games this week. Both teams had identical 4-1 records and the winner would stay close to unbeaten Mendham. The tension was very high and the first half proved to be a high energy battle. Both defenses were running on high test. Chatham's goal was to shut down Wellington Smith and Summit's was to do the same to Chatham's Chris McHugh. Both teams succeeded beyond their expectations. Smith was held to 4 1st half points, all free throws, and McHugh garnered only a single 1st half field goal. Fortunately for both sides other teammates took up the slack. For Summit it was Mike Dugan (7 points) and Maurice Torres (10 points). When the half ended Summit was holding a slim 4 point lead (25-21) and the Summit fan's nerves were on edge.
Summit came out for the 2nd half loaded for bear. They ran off the first 11 points of the 3rd quarter (4 by James Johnson, 5 by Dugan and 2 by Smith). A swarming defense wrecked havoc on Chatham's offense and forced many turnovers. With less that 4 minutes gone in the quarter Summit suddenly held a 36-21 advantage. While Chatham would rally a bit, the quarter ended with Summit on top 41-31. The 4th quarter was more of the same with Dugan (5 pts.), Torres (4 pts.) and Johnson (4 pts.) providing most of the fire power. At the same time the defense held Chatham to a single field goal and 4 free throws.
While Smith didn't score his usual 20 points, he was never the less a huge force on defense as he repeatedly forced Chatham to alter their shot or get it rejected. On offense he drew double or triple coverage every time he touched the ball, providing obvious opportunities for other players.
Dugan had the hot hand as he led the offense with 19 points. Torres wasn't far behind with 14 points.
Summit travels to Mendham on Friday to take on the unbeaten Minutemen.
