This was a huge win for Summit, avenging a holiday tournament loss to Cranford earlier in the season. It also sent a message that Summit can compete in Union County. If not for terrible foul shooting in the 4th quarter and some amazingly bad non-calls by the refs, more about that later, this game would have been a 10 to 15 point win.

Cranford got off to a fast start and opened a 7-2 lead 4 minutes into the 1st quarter. Four points from James Johnson and a 3-pointer by Maurice Torres sparked a 9-4 rally to tie the score at the end of the quarter. Summit turned up the defense in the 2nd quarter and held Cranford to only 6 points. Meanwhile Torres got hot , draining two straight 3s and adding a field goal as Summit built a 4 point half time lead (21-17).

The 3rd quarter was a gem as the defense throttled Cranford, allowing only 4 points. Wellington Smith took charge scoring 12 of Summit's 14 points. The 4th quarter began with Summit up by 14 points. A Basket by Torres and 2 FGs by Josh Sussman helped Summit build the lead to 15. With 3:50 remaining in the game Summit's lead was 46-30 and it looked like clear sailing. Cranford turned up the defensive pressure to a level where they were literally mauling Summit, yet the refs called nothing. Many of the Summit fans felt that the no-calls were unbelievable and like nothing they had seen before. The turnovers led to 5 quick points by Cranford. So with 2:25 left the lead was 11. Cranford continued to turn up the force until it couldn't be ignored by the refs. This led to a parade of Summit players to the foul line but our foul shooting was awful. In the 4th quarter we managed to sink only 12 of the 26 free throws attempted. Each time we would miss the free throws, Cranford went down the court and either Chris Drechsel would hit a 3 or Terrance Grier a deuce. With 27 seconds left the lead was down to 8, 10 seconds later it was 5, then 4 with 7 seconds. Time finally ran out with Summit up by 5 points.

Torres and Smith led Summit's scoring with 17 points each. Smith pulled down 9 rebounds. Summit get the dubious honor of playing top seeded St. Patricks on Friday. It was announced that the game will be at 8PM at Cranford, stay tuned for confirmation.
