This was a wonderful team victory. There were so many heros. John Alpizar anchored a superb defense and his cool head was so valuable running the offense from the point. James Johnson provided 10 first half points that helped Summit to a 32-30 lead and his spirited defense caused key Englewood turnovers in the 4th quarter that led to layups by Maurice Torres. Torres came off the bench and lit up the scoreboard with 15 first half points and 14 in the second half. Mike Dugan gave the Englewood offense fits with his tough bulldog defense. Josh Sussman was a power on defense and pulled down 7 big rebounds from the taller opponents. Wellington Smith played great offense (27 pts.), hauled in 11 rebounds and was a big force on both offense and defense. Finally, the team as a group had a terrific defensive game. They really gave the big, quick Englewood offense fits as they forced an amazing number of turnovers.

Summit jumped to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter but Englewood showed that they could put a lot of points on the scoreboard in a hurry when they closed out the quarter with a 13-2 run to lead 17-16. Torres (7 pts.) and Johnson (6 pts.) provided most of the offense. Summit got back on track in the 2nd quarter and took the lead 32-28 at the half. Torres continued on a torrid pace and finished the half with 15 points, Johnson had 10 points and Smith had six.

Summit put a very respectable 22 points on the in the 3rd quarter. Smith provided 12 points and Alpizar connected for 5 points. However, Englewood had their best quarter with 27 points, gaining a 55-54 lead.

Torres opened the 4th quarter with his 5th 3-pointer of the game. After Englewood answered with a trey Torres proceeded to score the next 8 points, the last three on transition layups off defensive turnovers. Suddenly Summit had the biggest lead of the game, 65-58 at the 4 minute mark. Two Englewood free throws and a field goal reduced the lead to 65-62. Smith answered the call with a 3-pointer and a field goal to give Summit an 8 point lead with 2:30 left to play. Englewood scored the next 3 points but a FG by Alpizar made it a 7 point game with 1:35 to go. Englewood cut the lead to 4 points with 45 second to go. Smith went to the foul line for a 1 and 1 with 20 seconds on the clock. Our past failings at the foul line loomed large in the fans minds, but Smith hit both ends of the 1 and 1 for a perfect 6 for 6 for the game. With a two possession lead and only 20 seconds left The fans began to realize a victory was in sight. To top it off the defense forced yet another turnover and Smith scored to ice the game.

It is hard to give enough praise to Summit's defense. It has played a major role all year, but has been outstanding in leading Summit to victories over Hillside and now Englewood. Torres led all scorers with 29 points, his personal best.

Summit will meet Haddonfield on Sunday at 2PM in the Rutgers Athletic Center. It is a rematch of last years title game.
