Summit led wire to wire, but not without a scare in the 3rd quarter. James Johnson 8 pts) and Wellington Smith (7 points) helped Summit take a 20-3 1st quarter lead. The defense was aggressive in holding Stevens to only 3 points. It looked like it might be a rout, but Stevens came back strong, turning up the defensive pressure, and out scoring Summit 20-12 in the 2nd quarter.
The first half of 3rd quarter was a continuation of the 2nd quarter as Stevens crept back to within 5 points. A pair of crucial 3 pointers by Mike Dugan helped restore a 10 point lead starting the 4th quarter. Johnson and Smith got the 4th quarter started right with field goals. After a Stevens FG, Smith drained a 3 pointer to make the score 55-38 and put the game out of reach.
Smith led the scoring with 21 points, but Johnson was close behind with 19. Summit made some improvement from the foul line , hitting 9 of 10 in the 4th quarter.
Summit will play for 5th place at 330PM on Thursday 12/30.
