Through the first three quarters it was a battle of 3-point shooting. Mendham took the first quarter 18-16 and both teams knocked down 4 treys. Summit picked up a 3-pointer from Mike Dugan, Wellington Smith, Maurice Torres and James Johnson. In the 2nd quarter Smith was really in a zone as he hit on 4 of the 5 3-points shots he tried. A fifth 3 was score by John Alpizar. The 3rd quarter was more of the same, but this time Torres had the hot hand with a pair of 3s and Dugan added his 2nd trey. For the first 3 quarters 12 of Summit's 15 field Goals were 3-pointers. Over the same period Mendham had 8 three-pointers out of 11 field goals. Summit's big 2nd quarter really broke the game open. Summit pulled away early in the 4th quarter behind an 8-0 run that features a trey by Alpizar and 2 points each from Smith, Torres and Johnson. Smith was the game's high scorer with 24 points, followed by Torres with 14 points. Summit's 13 3-pointers was tops for the season. Smith picked off 11 rebounds and now needs only 16 more to pass Jeff Hartlaub's record of 284 in a season. |
