Parsippany hung tough in the 1st half. Summit had a 12-2 lead mid-way through the 1st quarter but Paraippany out scored Summit 24-20 over the remainder of the half. That left an uncomfortable feeling with the Summit crowd. Summit's scoring was distributed nicely over 5 players; Wellington Smith (9 pts.), Mike Dugan (8 pts.), Maurice Torres (6 pts.), Josh Sussman (6 pts.) and Peter Melcon (3 pts.).
A minute or two into the 3rd quarter the lead was still 6 point (36-30). At that point Torres kick started a barrage of 3-pointers. Torres hit 3 in a row and Smith added another trey plus a FG and within the course of a few minutes the lead was 50-30, game over. Melcon added a pair of FGs for his personal best of 7 points.
The 4th quarter was more of the same as Smith drained 2 more 3s and Dugan contributed another 3-pointer. Over about a 7 minute span Summit had knocked down seven 3 point shots and blew the game wide open. At this point the bench was cleared and the reserves got some significant playing time.
Smith led the scoring with 20 point and added 13 rebounds. Torres (15 pts.) and Dugan (11 pts.) were also in double digits.
With a minimum of 3 games left Smith needs 21 points to exceed Dwayne Reid's 1097 career points. It should be noted that three other Summit players have exceeded 1000 points, but the exact number of points they scored is unknown. The Three are Willie Wilson, Dave Dixon and Jay Green.
Smith also has a chance to set a new season rebounding record. The current record holder is Jeff Hartlaub who recorded 284 rebounds back in 1965. Smith needs 34 more to break that record.
