Parsippany threw a pretty good zone defense at Summit right from the start. Unfortunately, Summit didn't handle it very well. They managed only 7 points in the 1st quarter, connecting on just 3 of 15 shots. The 2nd quarter was just barely better as they added 9 points, making 3 of 10 shots. Luckily for Summit, Parsippany couldn't handle Summit's aggressive defense, scoring 10 points in the first half. At the half Wellington Smith had been held to 2 points. Mike Dugan and Peter Melcon were the leading scorers with 4 points each.
The 3rd quarter got back on track a bit as Smith picked up 7 points and James Johnson had 5 points. Even though 15 points were scored the quarter was characterized by many sloppy Summit passes against a strong zone that resulted in many turnovers. Early in the 4th quarter Parsippany put on a 10-2 spurt and cut the 16 point lead to 8 points. Two buckets by Maurice Torres and a FG by Johnson got things back on track. Summit's continued weak free throw shooting (10 of 19) again hurt Summit down the stretch.
Parsippany is the only school in the conference with a composition floor and for some reason Summit has always had an off night when visiting the Parsippany Gym. It certainly happened tonight.
