A game with Weequahic is always exciting and unpredictable. Fortunately, Weequahic is playing their home games at Newark Vocational HS this year rather than the miniature court at Carver MS.
This season Summit and Weequahic are thought to be the two best teams in the conference. The first quarter ended in a draw at 18-18. Chris Conlon had the hot hand in the quarter with 9 points. Balanced scoring and good defense in the 2nd quarter gave Summit a 38-33 lead at the half.
Summit continued to build the lead through the 3rd quarter. With about 3 minutes left in the quarter Summit held a 49-39 advantage. Then Summit hit a rough patch. Over the next 5 minutes Weequahic went on a 17-2 run leaving Summit behind by 6 point (56-50) with 6 minutes left. The teams battled even over the next 5 minutes, but Summit couldn't close the gap. With 20 seconds left on the clock Summit managed to get to within 3 points at 73-70, but they had to foul and Weequahic made their free throws to ice the game.
In the torrid 4th quarter Weequahic's Lawerence was on fire, scoring 19 of his game high 34 points. Summit's free throw shooting contributed significantly to the loss, as they managed to sink only 11 of 23 attempts, and only 3 of 8 tries in the 4th quarter. Wellington Smith again led the offense with 24 points. He also pulled down 15 rebounds against a very athletic Weequahic team. Chris Conlon (12 pts), James Johnson (10 pts) and Maurice Torres ( 11 pts) all scored in double digits.
