But a lacrosse ball can take some funny bounces and in this game Summit seemed to get a season's worth of strange hops. Summit had lots of shots, but didn"t score again until 10 seconds left in the half when Todd Kaiser scored a Sam Kriegman assist. During that time Pete Britt had 7 saves and the Summit defense of Chris Conlon, Brendan Feeney, Conor Lyons and Kyle Isaacson(John Stuckey left the game with an injury) gave up only one goal, despite an uncharacteristic 4 penalties by Summit. Summit led 3-1 at the half. Ian Kelly scored unassisted late in the third and Scott Garibaldi, fed by John Alpizar, put Summit up 5-2 going into the fourth. Mon 04/18 4:00PMChatham AWon 11-7 Blue skies, comfortable temperature, good field conditions made this a near perfect day for lacrosse and the Summit- Chatham rivalry produced a great game at Chatham's Cougar Field.. Chatham, undefeated this year, came out of the gate fast and were up 2-0 with 2:28 gone in the first quarter. Summit regrouped and got the defense tight, but it wasn't until 3:23 left in the quarter that John Alpizar got Summit on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal. Chatham came back with their third goal with 1:01 to go and the quarter closed with Summit on the wrong end of a 3-1 score. The second quarter saw Summit's offense come alive. Mike Dugan scored at 10:34 on an assist from Todd Kaiser and less than a minute later Kaiser scored off an assist from Alpizar. Summit was back in it at 3-3. Summit sealed it with goals by Dugan (Alpizar assist) and Alpizar in the last 2 minutes. Pete Britt had 11 saves in goal. Summit is now 6-1.(Reporting by Jerry Dugan)

Sat 04/30 11:00AMDelbarton HLost 6-5 In its biggest test of the season Summit went up against Delbarton, the Star Ledger's number one team, in front of a big crowd at Tatlock Field and in a great lacrosse game came up one goal short. Rain before the game and showers throghout caused conditions that should favor offense. Yet this game had some of the toughest defensive play by both teams seen in a long time: no ground was given without a struggle.

John Alpizar, on a feed from Todd Kaiser, put Summit up 1-0 when he scored at 9:28 in the first quarter. Delbarton came back and controlled the ball for about seven minutes, but Summit's long sticks of Conor Lyons, Chris Conlon, John Stuckey and Brendan Feeney kept Delbarton's attack from getting clean shots. Pete Britt had 4 saves in the quarter before Delbarton got on the board with a minute to go. It was 1-1 at the end of the first.

Geoff Marks scooped a loose ball on the crease and shot to put Summit up 2-1 at 10:09 of the second quarter. Summit penalties late in the quarter gave Delbarton 2 manup opportunities. They capitalized on both to go up 3-2, but the half ended with a Deldarton penalty.

Summit held the ball to keep possesion for the opening of the third quarter. Summit couldn't exploit its man up opportunity and didn"t score. Mon 05/024:00PMLivingston HWon 15-1 Similarities between today's game and last Saturday's game ended with the visitors' green uniforms and some rain and threatening skies as Summit cruised to an easy 15-1 victory over Livingston at Tatlock Field. Summit's offense controled the ball most of the game, which made it a relatively quiet day for the defense. Summit lead 4-0 at the end of the first and 8-0 at the half and closed it out at 15-1. Summit had nine players with goals: Jake Lecky-4 goals, 1 assist, Ian Kelly- 3 goals, Marshall Harden-2 goals, Mike Dugan- 1 goal, 2 assists, Sam Kriegman- 1 goal, 1 assist, John Alpizar- 1 goal, 1 assist, Kevin Feeney- 1 goal, Rob Hillenbrand- 1 goal, Andrew Clark- 1 goal, Todd Kaiser-3 assists, Scott Garibaldi- 1 assist. Wed 05/04 4:30PMRidgewood ALost 16-10 here's alot going on: AP tests that delayed the start, 3 games in 5 days, traffic problems that made for a ridiculously long bus ride and a game that didn't start until 6:15 pm on a field without lights. But there is nothing to explain what happened when Summit met a very aggressive Ridgewood team that was ready for a street fight of a lacrosse game. Summit wasn't and took the lacrosse equivalent of a smack in the head that they couldn't shake off until the third quarter. Down 4-1 at the end of the first and 6-2 at the half, Summit couldn't get it together at either end of the field. Todd Kaiser had 2 unassisted first half goals for Summit's only scores.

Ridgewood went up 10-2 in the third before Will Gruetzmacher, on a Jake Lecky assist, got Summit on the board. Mike Dugan scored 3 goals (assists from Jake Lecky and John Alpizar), but Ridgewood put up another and the quarter closed with Summit in an 11-6 hole. Jake Lecky had 2 fourth quarter goals(1 Kaiser assist) and Will Gruetzmacher and John Alpizar each added one. But there was no stopping Ridgewood's offense, which racked up 5 more. To be fair, lighting in the fourth quarter wasn't goalie friendly. When the sun finally set on this in a flurry of penalty flags, it was a 16-10 defeat for Summit's third loss of the season. Ridgewood is 10-3 (Reporting by Jerry Dugan)

Geoff Marks (Alpizar assist) and sophmore Jake Grabowski (Hillenbrand assist) made it 14-3 in the fourth. Mon 05/16 4:00PMHunterdon Central HWon 12-5 Ranked fourth by the Star Ledger, Hunterdon Central came to Tatlock Field to face number 5 Summit. With very few common opponents, predictions for the outcome of this game were difficult. But considering their ranking and reputation for physical play, Summit would need a good game to come out on top. Summit brought thier "A" game and over four quarters HC couldn't handle the depth of Summit's offense or overcome Summit's unyielding defense. At 10:23 of the third quarter Geoff Marks (Kelly assist) made it 5-1 Summit, but HC came back with scores at 8:37 and a manup at 2:05. Kelly got it started in the fourth with a goal on an Alpizar assist, but HC answered 37 seconds later with one. Won 8-4 Summit combined a steady offense with a brutal, stifling defense to overcome Kinnelon 8-4 at Tatlock Field in the semi final round of the State Tournament. 2:30PM NJSIAA Group I Finals
Mt. Lakes @ Ridge
Won 8-6 The slogan on the back of the Summit lacrosse t-shirts says "It's a good day to be a Hilltopper". Today was a great day to be a Hilltopper as Summit beat Mountain Lakes, the defending champions, the Group One number 1 seed and the Star Ledger number one ranked team, 8-6 in the Group One Championship game at Ridge High School. Both teams came out tentatively with early big game jitters. Lakes scored first at 5:25 in the opening quarter. John Alpizar tied it at 3:23 with an unassisted goal and the quarter ended tied at 1 goal each. Alpizar scored again at 9:56 in the second quarter. Mike Dugan scored at 3:12 on an Alpizar assist, but Lakes came back with a score that also resulted in a Summit penalty. Facing off in a mandown situation, Kevin Feeney came up with the ball and the possession prevented Lakes from capitalizing on thier manup. Lakes tied it at 1:12. As the quarter randown, Summit came up with a big steal and Todd Kaiser hit Dugan breaking to the goal for a score at 0:01 for a 4-3 Summit halftime lead.

Lakes scored first in the third at 9:21 and for the next six minutes the teams battled defensively. Dugan scored at 3:01 on an Alpizar pass and Jake Lecky scored on a Dugan assist and it looked like the momentum was with Summit. But Lakes came back with a manup goal at 1:16 and another score at 0:43 and it was all even again as the quarter ended.

Summit's defense dug in in the fourth. Longstcks Chris Conlon, John Stuckey, Conor Lyons and Brendan Feeney thwarted the Lakers offensive unit and Pete Britt came up with 3 big saves in the quarter. Summit's defense played its usual aggressive style, but avoided any penaltiess. Kaiser scored at 3:41 on an Alpizar feed to break the tie. With a one goal lead and more than 3 minutes to play, sidelne strategists debated whether Summit should play to protect the lead or go to the goal and risk giving the Lakers an opportunity to score. With 3:02 to play Alpizar ended the debate by scoring his third goal to make it 8-6 Summit. Again Summit's defense dug in and turned back Lakes last desperate efforts. Summit controlled the ball over the last minute and when the horn sounded Summit was the Group One State Champion. Summit's 12-5 victory over Hunterdon Central on May 16 is ancient history at this time of the season. Summit could not look beyond them. Throw into the mix the possibility of a letdown after the emotional Mountain Lakes victory on Saturday, HC's underdog status and 100+ temperature on the field and all the ingredients for an interesting lacrosse game existed. And that what this game was. It was also a game of two different halves, as Summit struggled in the first and put together a gem of a second half. Hunterdon Central controlled the opening faceoff and ranoff a possesion that lasted 4 minutes and 7 seconds. During that time goalie Pete Britt turned back 4 shots. At 2:33 Mike Dugan put Summit up 1-0 on a goal with a Chris Conlon assist. HC came back with a goal at 2:02 and the quarter ended tied at 1. HC came up with 2 second quarter goals to go up 3-1 before Kevin Feeney scored on a Jake Lecky feed and the half ended with Summit down 3-2. Despite some breakdowns at both ends of the field, Summit was still in striking range.

The second half opened with Kevin Feeney controlling the faceoff. Dugan tied it with a goal on a Kevin Feeney assit at 10:34. HC came back quickly to go up 4-3 at 9:50, but Dugan scored at 9:21, again fed by Kevin Feeney, and it was tied at 4. John Alpizar put Summit up 5-4 when he scored at 2:54 on Chris Conlon's second assist of the game. Summit was up 5-4 with a quarter to play. The early fourth quarter was a defensive grind and Chris Conlon, John Stuckey, Brendan Feeney and Conor Lyons tightened up, left no one uncoverd, forced turnovers and got ground balls and just wore HC down in the blistering heat. Alpizar put Summit up by 2 at 4 minutes with an unassisted goal. With less than 2 minutes to play, Alpizar stripped an HC middie 10 yards across midfield and immediately hit Kaiser who fed Dugan for Summit's last score to put Summit up 7-3. Kevin Feeney controlled the final face off and with help from Ian Kelly, Geoff Marks and the rest of the offensive unit Summit ran down the clock. Summit's second half was a great team effort. Pete Britt had 14 saves in goal.
