Summit did more than hold their own in the rematch. The Hilltoppers had a total team effort, getting contributions early from unlikely sources. Senior guard Caitlin Lackaye scored 4 of her 6 points in the 1st half while Renee Freeden had 7 of her 10 in the 1st half to give Summit a slim 19-18 lead at the half. Summit extended its lead to three in the 3rd (28-25) and entered the 4th quarter leading for the 2nd consecutive game. Unfortunately, for the 2nd straight game, Summit could not hold the lead. With less than 90 seconds left, Summit had a 2 point lead, the ball and Dover was chasing it. Summit looked patient and relaxed but when Dover's defense opened a driving lane, Summit saw its opportunity to close out the game. Unfortunately for the Hilltoppers, the shot was missed and Dover rebounded the ball. The Hilltopper defense had kept Dover's top 2 scorers under 10 points until that point. But, with 45 seconds left, Dover found one more basket from these players. Jess Novo collided with a Dover player inadvertently and when she went down it left C. Castro, Dover's point guard wide open for a 3 which she nailed, giving Dover a 1 point lead which they would not relinquish. It was a great effort by the Hilltoppers at home who clearly missed the presence of their leading scorer Scott at the end of the game. Allison Cahott led Summit with 12 points. |
