This was a game of momentums shifts. In the beginning it appeared that it would be an easy Summit victory. Going into the bottom of the 3rd inning Summit held a seemingly insurmountable 9-0 lead. But then North Plainfield began to chip away at the lead. In the bottom 6th they had closed the gap to 11-7. N. Plainfield had the bases loaded with one out and the tieing run was at the plate. At this point Jon Buscaino took over the pitching duties from Matt Krell , who had relieved starter Kevin Lackaye after 4 innings. The next batter hit into a 5-4 fielder's choice that allowed one run to score and left runners at 1st and 3rd with the tieing run still at bat. In an attempt to get both runners into scoring position N. Plainfield attempted a double steal. But Andrew Furman gunned the ball down to 2nd for the out before the runner from 3rd got to the plate, ending the uprising.
Then in the top of the 7th Summit came back with 4 unearned runs on 3 hits and 2 North Plainfield errors to ice the game. Buscaino struck out the side in the bottom of the 7th to end the game.
Summit Scoring:
1st inning: Mark Shehata walked, Buscaino singled and Shehata scored on an infield error.
2nd inning: Sam Zerfoss had a lead off single, Bernie Grishman was on with an error and Tim Donnally singled to score Zerfoss. After 2 outs, Eric Della Piazza singled in Grishman and Furman walked to load the bases. A double by Sam Rose scored Donnally and Della Piazza and a Kevin Lackaye single brought Rose home.
3rd inning: With 2 outs, Shehata was walked and stole 2nd. Buscaino singled to score Shehata and went to 2nd on the throw home. Della Piazza singled in Buscaino.
4th inning: Lackaye got on via and error and singles by Zerfoss and Donnally resulted in 2 runs.
7th inning: Buscaino led off with a single. A Della Piazza walk and single by Rose loaded the bases with 1 out. Coach Fenska called for a squeeze play, but it backfired when the pitcher quickly fielded the bunt that threw out Buscaino at home, but left the bases loaded. Zerfoss was safe on a error by the pitcher that allowed one run to score. The pitcher tied a pickoff at 3rd and threw wide allowing two runs to score. A single by Donnally drove in the final run.
