Hit batters: Furman(1) |
With a game every day of this week Summit drew on the JV battery of Simon Swartzmaier (P) and Fred Westphalen(C) for additional help. They performed very well. Schwartzmaier pitched a complete game allowing 5 runs and 8 hits. While Westphalen went 2 for 3 and scored 1 run, in addition to doing a fine job defensively.
Scotch Plains took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st with a walk and a double. Summit tied the game in the top of the 3rd on singles by Westphalen and Bernie Grishman and an error by the catcher. Summit took a 2-1 lead in the 4th. Jon Buscaino led off with a single but was removed by Eric Della Piazza's fielder choice. Della Piazza moved to 3rd when Sam Rose hit a ground ball that was booted by the shortstop. A ground out by Kevin Lackaye drove in Della Piazza.
Scotch Plains regained a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth when their first batter was called safe on a very bad call by the lone umpire, from behind home plate. After 2 outs a home run drove in the 2 runs. Scotch Plains added another run in the 5th on a solo home run. Their 5th run came in the 6th inning from a leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly.
Summit threatened in the top of the 7th. With 2 out Andrew Furman, pinch hitting, was hit by a pitch and Westphalen singled. Furman appeared to score when Grishman beat out an infield single. Unfortunately, the lone umpire at home plate called him out and the game was over.
Many fans were disappointed to find that Swartzmaier is a German exchange and will only be here for this one school year. He would have made a fine addition to Summit's baseball program in future years.
