Fri 09/094:00PMMount Olive A Lost 2-1 (25-12,23-25,25-18) The Hilltoppers kicked off their season with a spirited effort in a losing cause. Mt. Olive swarmed the team in the first game to the tune of 25-12 but, behind the serving of Juli Avery, Sarah Butters and Maria Sancho, the Hilltoppers won a highly contested 2nd game 25-23. Unfortunately for Summit, in a closely played 3rd game, Mt. Olive played flawlessly in the waning rotations of the match, erasing an 18-17 deficit and winning the 3rd and decisive game 25-18. Lost 2-1 (25-11; 13-25; 21-25) After a great first game led by the strong serving of Emily Aicher and Krista Hendrickson, the team had a let down in the second game of the match. Combined with the surprisingly strong serving of Mt. Olive, the Hilltoppers were easily overcome in the second game. The third game was a competitive affair with many lead changes and momentum swings. Although the Hilltoppers had a late 19-18 lead, Mt. Olive ran off the next 5 points to take control of the match.
Tue 09/134:00PMParsippany H Lost 2-0 (25-8,25-21) A slow start for the Hilltoppers cost them dearly in this contest. Parsippany dominated in a 25-8 first game rout but Summit remained resolute and played a much more competitive 2nd game. Led by Tamara Zagorovskya and Scheller Hinkle on offense (7 kills combined) and Maria Sancho's 7 assista and 2 aces, the Hilltoppers were in the match late before succumbing to Parsippany 25-21. Lost 2-0 (21-25; 7-25) Once again the efforts of the Hilltoppers were not quite enough. Summit held a 20-17 lead late in the first game but were outscored 8-1 in the closing rotations to seal the game. The lost opportunity seemed to take the steam out of the team and they never recovered in the second game.Lost (2-0) 25-8,25-21
Thu 09/154:00PMChatham H Lost 2-0 (25-11,25-17) Summit played their best match of the season thus far against this highly skilled opponent. The score was not indicative of the level of play throughout the match by the Hilltoppers. Catherine DeSantis and Alison Delduca anchored the backline throughout the match while Abby Clark and Juli Avery pacing the team from the serving line. Unfortunately, late in the match once again, the Hilltoppers could not maintain their level of play and lost the match. Lost 2-0 (17-25; 22-25) In perhaps the best played match of the season for the Hilltoppers, Summit competed exceptionally well against a very tough Chatham squad. In the first game, Summit rallied from a 19-12 deficit to 19-15 but it was just too much of a gap to make up against this opponent. Chatham finished off the game with a 6-2 run.

In the second game, Summit fought back late in the game to a 19-19 score behind the blocking and attacking of sophomore Krista Hendrickson and again to within 1 (22-21) behind the serving of sophomore setter Elaine Gonzalez. Unfortunately, Chatham took 3 of the final 4 points for the victory.
Sat 09/1711:00AMParsippany Hills A Lost 2-0 (25-20,25-19) This closely contested match was decided by the power numbers. Par Hills hit for 10 aces and 13 kills in the match while Summit could only muster 5 aces and 8 kills. This difference in power numbers came through in the key points late in each game when it seemed that every big point was Par Hill's. The Hilltoppers' Maria Sancho and Juli Avery hit 2 aces each to lead the squad and Scheller Hinkle led Summit from the front row with 5 kills and 1 block. Lost 2-0 (21-25; 21-25) The Hilltoppers continued their "so close" play early this season in a highly contested matck versus Par Hills. There were many lead changes and momentum swings but the defensive efforts of junior middle back Rosie Rodriguez and sophomore middle back Christine Espinoza held Summit close. Summit tied the game at 16 but lost the very next point to fall back within 1. Par Hills' strong serving gave them the next 4 points to provide a 21-17 cushion. Summit could get no closer than 24-21 before falling in the next point.

In the second game, the Hilltoppers had a much more difficult task, falling behind late by a score of 20-14 after fighting back to a 16-14 deficit. Junior back row specialist Emily Wise gave Summit a chance by winning 4 service points late bringing Summit to a 23-21 deficit. Once again though, Summit came up short, losing a highly competitive game 25-21. The Hilltoppers were led by Rosemary Rodriguez (2 digs, 2 kills), Mary Chapman (2 kills), Natalia Pinzon (2 assists) and Jacklyn Faraci (2 blocks).
Tue 09/204:00PMMendham H Lost 2-0 (25-17,25-20) The Hilltoppers again had a good effort that just came up a bit short. In a highly anticipated match against the #1 team in the conference, Summit fought valiantly against the highly effective hitting attack of Mendham. Summit was nearly perfect from the serving line, missing only 1 serve the entire match. The team also had a season high 27 digs, led by the 5 digs of Vanessa Amador and Alison DelDuca. Although the match was very competitive, Summit could not find a way to power through Mendham's defense on a consistent basis. The only ace for the Hilltoppers came from Scheller Hinkle and Summit was only able to muster 5 kills against the #1 team. However, a great deal of credit needs to be given to the team for their efforts since they played most of the second game without their setter Maria Sancho due to an injury. Backup setter Lucia Hermo filled the void admirably and the rest of the team picked up their play to compensate for the loss, led by Juli Avery -who took some of the setting duties- and Sarah Butters' defensive efforts (4 digs). Lost 2-0 (25-15 25-12) In a surprisingly inconsistent game, the Hilltoppers fell to Mendham in a quick 2 games. Summit's serving, normally an effective and consistent weapon, was eratic and highly ineffective in this game. Although the Hilltoppers showed signs of their potential, these instances were not frequent enough to overcome a very effective and consistent Mendham team. Rosemary Rodriguez was a bright star on defense, leading the team with 4 digs while Mary Chapman paced the Hilltoppers from the front line with 2 kills.
Thu 09/224:00PMWest Essex HS H Lost 2-0 (25-19, 25-12)The Hilltoppers came out strong in the sixth game of the campaign and appeared to be in the game late until the strong serving of West Essex took the steam out of the sails of the Hilltoppers.

Game 2 did not yield the same type of result though. Summit fell quickly behind and could not match West Essex's power serving or effective attacking The Hilltoppers were once again nearly flawless from the service line thanks in part to Tamara Zagorovskya's 6 service points. Tamara also led the team in kills with 3 and added a block. The defense was anchored by Abby Clark with 7 digs and 1 ace and super backline sub Alison Dionne who chipped in with 6 digs.

Lost 2-0 (25-11, 25) The JV squad had a good "bounce-back" game against West Essex although the team did not pickup a win. In game 1, the Hilltoppers had key miscues on certain points that costthem dearly throughout the game. Although the overall play was good, these key errors prevented the team from challenging West Essex. The second game proved to be a better showing for the squad. The team made the most of their opportunities and played the key points very well. The difference in the game was the serving power of West Essex and a few too many passing errors. The Hilltoppers had only 2 aces all game (0 in the 2nd game) while West Essex seemed to always get 1 in the key moments. With the score 24-23 West Essex, the opposing server aced out the match. Krista Hendrickson led the team's offense in the 2nd game with 3 kills and 1 block. Elaine Gonzalez had 5 assists and 7 service points from the setter's position. Emily Wise had a solid game from the back line, contributing 3 digs to the effort.
Mon 09/264:00PMOak Knoll H Lost 2-1 (11-25,27-25, 25-14) The Hilltoppers came out of the gate with a vengeance and quickly took control of game 1 behind the serving of Juli Avery and Maria Sancho who combined for 4 aces and 11 service points in game 1. However, Summit's 8 service errors were disconcerting considering that the team had only had 8 service errors total during the last 3 matches.

In a tightly contested 2nd game, Summit had opportunities to distance themselves from Oak Knoll but key hitting and serving errors by the Hilltoppers kept the opponents within range. The difference in the game was the lack of serving consistency by Summit which had been a trademark of this team since the 3rd match of the season. Summit was only 16 of 22 in the second game from the serving line, giving Oak Knoll an easy 6 pts.

The 3rd and decisive game was not as closely fought as the previous 2 primarily because Oak Knoll's premier server, after missing 2 of her previous 3 serves, finally got on track and scored 6 service points in the first rotation to give Oak Knoll all the cushion it needed to win this game. Summit tried to stay close by returning to their consistent serving (13 of 16 for the game) but their hitting did not follow suit (5 kills, 7 errors in game 3). Summit only managed to hit for 5 of their total 21 kills for the match in this game while hitting over half (7) of their 13 errors.

Avery and Sancho led the way from the serving line with 26 service points and 8 of the team's 9 aces. Scheller Hinkle was outstanding from a defensive standpoint, earning 11 digs for the match. Tamara Zagorovskya led the charge from the front line, putting down 8 kills and 1 block.

Won 2-1 (24-26, 25-16,25- 8) In a heated 1st game that saw numerous lead changes and momentum swings, Summit came very close to winning the closing points and sealing the 1st game win but 5 serving errors, 3 of them late in the game, sealed their fate.

In the remaing 2 games, Summit imposed their will behind the serving line, serving not only consistently but also earning some aces. As a matter of fact, Summit only committed 3 service errors in the last 2 games while hitting for 12 of their 17 aces in the same games. If the Hilltopper serving wasn't yielding results, the offense was putting pressure on the Oak Knoll defense. The Hilltopper offense put up 10 kills, 8 of them in the last 2 games, to solidify Summit's 1st win.

Emily Aicher and Anna Szaro combined for 10 aces and 29 service points to lead the serving barrage while Steph Rowan and Jacklyn Faraci combined for 9 of the 10 team kills. Krista Hendrickson led the team defensively with 5 digs.

Tue 09/274:00PMMorristown A Lost 2-1 (22-25,25-20,25-11) In a replay of recent games, the Hilltoppers came out firing on all cylinders but could not make the adjustments necessary to carry their efforts to a victory.

Once again Summit had many good individual performances but could not find a way to make all the pieces click together at critical points in the match. Juli Avery was outstanding on defense registering a team leading 11 digs in the match. Juli also seemed to be the only consistent threat from the service line, scoring 11 serving points and 4 aces. Scheller Hinkle once again led the offense with 4 kills and 1 block.

Lost 2-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-18) The JV Squad played another good match but, much like the Varsity, critical errors at key points prevented the team from celebrating its 2nd win. Emily Aicher led the team in defense (6 digs) and from the service line (9 service points) while Mariela Perez had her best day of the season registering a team leading 4 kills and a season best 5 blocks.
Thu 09/294:00PMRoxbury H Lost 2-0 (25-7, 25-15) In a match reminiscent of many of the previous ones this year, Summit came out once again on the short end of the result. The team played a much better 2nd game overall but found themselves behind late in the match and just were not able to overcome the deficit. Summit welcomed back Abby Clark from her wrist injury and she stepped right in, scoring 5 service points and the only ace for Summit. Tamara Zagorovskya led the Hilltoppers from the front scoring 3 kills and 3 blocks. Sarah Butters also chipped in with 2 blocks. Lost 2-0 (25-11, 25-16) The JV Squad looked overmatched in this match as they trailed early in each game and could not mount any semblance of a comeback against their opponent. Elaine Gonzalez and Rosie Rodriguez notched 3 digs a piece while Krista Hendrickson once again led the Hilltoppers with 2 kills and 1 block.
Thu 10/064:00PMMount Olive H Lost 2-0 (25-19, 25-23) In each game Summit rallied to make it very close. In the final game Summit was down 24-16 but rallied to get to 24-23 before Mt. Olive broke through with the winning point.
Tue 10/114:00PMParsippany A Lost 2-0 (25-14, 25-8) In a repeat of many other games this season, the Hilltoppers put in a great effort but could not find the offensive consistency or produce enough defensive stops to prevent another loss. Summit had 0 aces and was only able to muster 6 kills during the match while accumulating 47 digs, a clear indication that the Hilltoppers were not able to put away the opportunities they earned playing good defensive volleyball. Tamara Zagorovskya had an impactful game, earning a team leading 2 kills, 4 digs and a team leading 2 blocks. Abby Clark continued her great run this season earning 9 digs and tying Tamara for a team leading 2 kills. Lost 2-0 (25-16, 25-21) The JV Team had yet another tough loss. Although the squad was competitive throughout most of the match, it could not sustain the level of play needed to finish with the win. In both games, Parsippany opened a 6 point lead late which was too large to overcome (19-13 game 1; 20-14 game 2). Krista Hendrickson led the team again in serving with 3 aces and had a team leading 2 kills. Emily Aicher and Rosie Rodriguez each did their part on defense, earning a combined 12 digs during the match.

Fri 10/144:00PMChatham A Lost 2-0 (25-22, 25-9) Once again Summit played at a very competitive level against top competition. Unfortunately, the result was the same as previous games. The Hilltoppers started off on fire against Chatham in their home court, jumping to a 7-2 lead early on. Chatham kept chipping away at the lead throughout the game and managed to gain the lead late at 21-20. Although the Hilltoppers responded to the late charge, Chatham's offensive firepower was the difference in this tightly contested game.

In the second game, the Hilltoppers could not stop Chatham's offensive power even though there were many fine defensive plays produced by Summit's players. Unfortunately, Summit could not put away its opportunities while Chatham was highly effective with theirs.

Juli Avery continued her flawless serving during the second half of the season, earning 7 serving points while going a perfect 10 for 10 from the service line. Abby Clark continued to develop as an effective outside hitter for the Hilltoppers, hitting for a team leading 5 kills with no errors (best % this season in a match) in 8 attempts and also added a team leading 3 aces. Betina Sheridan shone from the back line, earning a team leading 6 digs on a day where many of Chatham's powerful attacks were finding the floor.
Lost 2-0 (25-5,25-19) The Hilltoppers had a disppointing outing against their conference rival. Unlike their first meeting which was highly competitive and hard fought, this one proved to be a sleeper. Chatham took an insurmountable 12-1 lead in the first game and never looked back. Although the Hilltoppers responded to the challenge in the second game, this did not occur until Chatham had a 12-4 lead. Thanks to serving of Rosemary Rodriguez though (2 aces and 1 dig), Summit fought back to within 4 at 15-11 but it proved to be too little too late.
Sat 10/15 Dayton Won 2-0 (25-9, 25-10) Congratulations to the Hilltoppers for their first win of the season. The Lady Hilltoppers dominated from start to finish and controlled the match throughout. Juli Avery set the tone in both games, earning 22 service points, 9 aces and 7 digs. Abby Clark and Scheller Hinkle combined for 10 kills (Scheller also had 5 digs) while Alison DelDuca led the team from the backline with 6 digs.

Lost 2-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-19) Summit suffered a very disappointing loss after a tremendous effort at Chatham. After a closely contested 1st game that Summit pulled out thanks to Mariela Perez and Stephanie Zamora's serving. Although the result was not favorable for the Hilltoppers in the 2nd and 3rd games, Summit had outstanding performances led by Mariela's 4 kills and Jacklyn Faraci's 4 kills from the front line as well as Krista Hendrickson's team leading 9 digs (also had 4 kills). Elaine Gonzales had a season high 11 assists while also chipping in with 8 digs. Zamora was forced to play both the front and backline due to the absence of some players and held her own from the backline, contributing 7 digs and 2 aces.

Mon 10/17 4:00PM Hanover Park Lost 2-0 (25-16, 25-18) The Hilltoppers had an extremely competitive and hard fought game with Hanover Park on Monday. The match had many momentum swings and outstanding plays by both squads. Hanover Park was able to pull away late in each game to seal the match though. Maria Sancho and Juli Avery continue their strong serving of late, combining for 14 service attempts, 0 errors, and 4 of the team's 7 aces. Maria also assisted on 11 kills for the match. Vanesa Amador made a strong comeback to the squad with a team leading 9 digs on defense while Scheller Hinkle and Abby Clark provided the frontline firepower, notching 7 of the team's 13 kills for the match.

Lost 2-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-17) The JV Squad played an extremely intense match as well. This match had multiple lead changes, amazing momentum changing plays and plenty of drama. The Hilltoppers were very close to winning game 1, serving for the match at 24-23 but failed to get the serve over and fell soon thereafter by a score of 26-24.

Although Summit controlled most of the second match, Hanover Park kept fighting back, from 14-9 down to 16-12 to 18-15 and to as close as 23-20 before succumbing to the Hilltoppers. The 3rd game proved to be Summit's undoing as the Lady Hilltoppers spotted Hanover Park a 7-2 lead and fought all game long to close that gap. Summit got as close as 20-17 but was not to score another point in the match.

Tue 10/184:00PMParsippany Hills H Lost 2-0 (25-22, 25-23) In almost an identical replay of their earlier match, Summit and Par Hills engaged in another highly entertaining and competitive match. Summit and Par Hills exchanged leads, momentum swings and both squads made key plays down the stretch to put in doubt the outcome of each game until the very last points. Par Hills was able to outgun Summit in the last few points of each game although the Hilltopper defense kept plays alive repeatedly to create some amazing rallies.

However, these defensive plays were not converted into offensive points which, in essence, prevented the Hilltoppers from picking up the win.

Juli Avery and Maria Sancho starred defensively for Summit combining for 22 digs. Juli led the team with 4 aces and 4 kills as well. Maria had another good day running the offense, earning 13 assists in the match. Abby Clark continued her great emergence as an offensive threat, earning 4 kills in the match. Captain Tamara Zagorovskya was again a factor in the front line with 3 blocks and 3 kills for the match.

Lost 2-0 (25-24, 25-15) The JV squad also performed well and continues to play extremely competitive volleyball. As in previous games that Summit has not won, this was a match of missed opportunities. Summit lost the first game by a 26-24 score even though the Hilltoppers were serving for the game at 24-23. Missed serves during this game were key as Summit had a total of 6, which turned out to be key in the outcome of this game.

The second game was again one of missed opportunities.Summit spotted Par Hills a 7-1 lead before storming back to within 3 at 12-15. However, another string of hitting and blocking errors pushed the lead back up to 6 and Summit was not able to come back from that deficit. The Hilltoppers played aggressively though and set a season high total for attack attempts and kills which showed a drastic improvement in their passing and defensive ability.

Emily Aicher continued her stellar serving with 5 aces. Elaine Gonzales led the team with 16 service points and 12 assists. Rosemary Rodrigues led the defensive effort with a team leading 8 digs while Jacklyn Faraci was flawless from the front line with 3 kills and 2 blocks and 0 errors. But the player of the game was Captain Krista Erickson who had a team leading 7 kills, 2 blocks and 7 digs.

Wed 10/19 4:00PM Roselle Cath. JV UCT) Los 2-0 (25-10, 25-13vs. Roselle Catholic. Summit was matched up against the #2 seeded Roselle Catholic in the 1st round of the JV county tournament.

Roselle Catholic outclassed Summit in the first game, racing to a 7-0 lead before Summit got on the board. The 2nd game proved to be more competitive. Summit trailed 7-6, led 10-9 and trailed again 12-11. However, that was as close as Summit was to get for the remainder of the match. Roselle Catholic's tough serving and offense proved to be too much for the Hilltoppers.

Emily Aicher led the Hilltoppers defensively with 5 digs while Krista Hendrickson led the offense with 3 kills. Leah Weiss' 4 service points led the team from the serving area.

Thu 10/204:00PMMendham A Lost 2-0 (25-17, 25-18) Maria Sancho had 5 assists & 3 service points, Abby Clark had 2 kills and 2 aces. Lost 2-0 (25-23, 25-21) A great effort by the Hilltoppers came up just a bit short. An outstanding match that wasn't decided until the last few rotations of each game. Summit could not seem to find the tough serve it needed during the last few points of each game while Mendham relied on their power serving to win each game and the match.

Krista Hendrickson had an error free performance from the front line, notching 2 kills and 2 blocks in the process while playing outstanding defense as well (6 digs-2nd on team). Rosemary Rodrigues had a team leading 20 digs (a season benchmark for the team) as well as 7 service points to lead the Summit charge. Mariela Perez had a great day from the front line as well, finishing off a team leading 3 kills and chipping in with 2 blocks on defense.

Tue 10/254:00PMWest Essex A Lost 2-0 (25-20, 25-22) Heartbreaking losses seem to be the running theme for this season. The team played a close game 1 but a late surge by West Essex pushed the lead to 21-17. Summit rallied and got within 3 at 22-19 but could not muster any more points and fell 25-20. Summit gave up a big early lead in the second game that they could never come back from. With the score 13-8 West Essex, the Hilltoppers gave up the next 5 points to fall to 18-8. Once again Summit rallied and got to within 2 at 19-17 behind the serving of Scheller Hinkle but the early deficit was too much to overcome and West Essex took control of the match late.

Juli Avery led the team defensively with 9 digs while Sara Butters knocked in 5 aces. Tamara Zagorovskya led the team with 2 kills and 2 blocks from the front line.
Lost 2-0 (25-18, 29-27) Continuing their own trend of playing well enough to lose, the JV teased their fans with another closely contested match that just did not pay off in the end. With the game tied at 17, West Essex opened up a slight lead to 21-17. Summit responded but the fight was short-lived. West Essex closed out the game at 25-18. The second game proved to be more gut-wrenching than the first. In a closely played game, Summit came back from a 16-11, 18-16 and 23-19 deficits to take the lead 24-23 behind the serving of Mariela Perez. Summit had game points at 24-23, 26-25 and 27-26 before bowing out to West Essex.

Rosie Rodrigues led the team with 3 aces and 4 digs while Anna Szaro, Krista Hendrickson and Jacklyn Faraci had 2 kills each. Jacklyn also had 2 blocks to lead the team.

Thu 10/274:00PMMorristown H Lost 2-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-16)Summit comes up short yet again after a great effort. The first game saw the Hilltoppers trail 16-13 and 20-16. After coming back to within 1 at 20-19, Morristown took control of the game for good.

The Hilltoppers took the momentum they gathered in the first game and carried it over to game 2. After Morristown raced to a 7-0 lead, Abby Clark ran off 14 service points in a row to give Summit an insurmountable 15-7 lead. Although Morristown tried to come back, Summit held them off and took game 2.

Game 3 did not go according to plan. 4 of the first 6 rotations were serving errors for Summit and this helped Morristown race off to a 12-3 lead. Summit had barely any response until Morristown took a 21-8 lead.
Somehow the pressure of elimination elicited the best plays from Summit and the Hilltoppers fought back to within 7 at 23-16 behind the serving of Scheller Hinkle. Unfortunately, the lead was too large to overcome and Summit fell 25-16.

Sara Butters led the team with 5 kills while Juli Avery had 12 digs. Abby Clark had 16 service points for the match.

Lost 2-1 (25-23, 33-35,25-20) Summit came back from a 24-21 deficit to tie the game up and had match points in game 2 at 25-24, 29-28, 31-30 and 32-31 but could not finish off Morristown.

In game 3, Summit and Morristown traded leads and multiple ties throughout the game. With the score 15-15, Morristown had 7 straight service points to take a commanding and insurmountable 22-17 lead. Summit never gave up and came back to within 3 at 23-20 before yielding to Morristown.

Leah Weiss led the team with 5 aces and 12 service points while Rosie Rodrigues led the team in digs with 13. Elaine Gonzales had 18 assists while Krista Hendrikson led the frontline attack with 7 kills and 1 block.

Tue 11/014:00PMRoxbury A
Wed 11/024:00PMHanover Park H Lost 2-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-16) In another heartbreaking game, the Hilltoppers yet again fell short of the goal. Unfortunately, this time, unnatural events changed the face of the game. With Summit crushing HP 20-11 in game 1, a fire alarm went off forcing the evacuation of the building. The 20 minute delay stopped any momentum Summit had and allowed HP to regroup. Summit was outscored 9-5 for the remainder of the game, a sign of things to come. HP came as close as 21-20 before succumbing to the Hilltoppers in game 1.

Game 2 and 3 were competitive but Summit could not solve the HP attack and in turn could not produce enough kills to keep up with their offense. Summit had a season high 90 total attacks but only managed 18 kills while committing 16 hitting errors.

Congratulations to the squad for their efforts and mental toughness all season. A special thanks for the seniors for their leadership and commitment all season. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR FUTURE VOLLEYBALL AND NON-VBALL ENDEAVORS!!!!!

Lost 2-0 (25-17, 25-9) In a highly unexpected turn of events, the JV squad underachieved in their last game of the season. After playing exceptionally well enough to come close in most of the last 7-8 games, Summit played one of its least competitive matches of the season. The squad showed drastic improvement this season nonetheless and performed quite well considering that no player touched a volleyball competitively the year before this season. A heartfelt thanks to all the juniors for their leadership and commitment during the season.

Thanks as well to the sophomores for their drive and energy all season long.
