Summit put on a furious 4th quarter rally that expired as time ran out with Summit on Dover's 1 foot line. Dover had entered the 4th with possession of the football and carrying a 17-7 lead (more about that later), but then the excitement began. Summit stopped the Dover ground game and took over at midfield and scored 5 plays later. Edgar Ozols hit Scott O'Sullivan for 4 yards and Will Gruetzmacher ran 14 yards giving Summit a 1st down at the Dover 32. A pass from Ozols to James Johnson covered 8 yards. Gruetzmacher moved the ball to another 1st down at the Dover 13. On the next play Gruetzmacher raced 13 yards for the TD. He then added the extra point to make it a 17-14 game.

After the kickoff the Summit defense stopped Dover's running game that had been so impressive in the 1st half. Dover was forced to punt after 3 plays and Summit would get the ball back with plenty of time left. Unfortunately, the punt was fumbled and Dover took over on the Summit 31 yard line. However, aided by the first penalty of the game, Summit held Dover and regained possession on their 31 yard line. After 2 incomplete passes, O'Sullivan connected with David Roduit for 13 yards and a 1st down. O'Sullivan picked up another 1st down at the Dover 45 on a QB keeper. At this point the clock was down to about 2 minutes and Summit had used all of their time outs. A pass from Ozols to O'Sullivan gave Summit another 1st down at the Dover 13. Gruetzmacher moved the ball to the 7 yard line and an incomplete pass stopped the clock with about 50 second on the clock. Gruetzmacher gained 5 yards to the 2, and the clock was running. On the next play Gruetzmacher went left, cut through a hole and appeared to have a TD, but the referee ruled his knee had hit the ground a foot short. It took 15 seconds to unpile the players and with the clock running Summit rushed to snap the ball as the clock approached zero. They got the snap off before time ran out , but the pitch out went wrong and the game was over.

In the 1st half Dover scored first on a 75 yard drive that consumed 17 plays. Summit responded with a 3 play drive to tie the score. The key play was an Ozols pass to Johnson that covered 69 yards. Gruetzmacher ran the final 7 yards for the TD.

A major turning point of the game came on the opening possession of the 2nd half. With 4th and 1, with the ball at Summit's 35 yard line, Summit, in an unusual call, elected to go for the 1st down rather than punt the ball. The attempt failed and Dover took over deep in Summit territory. Dover ran the ball 9 times and scored to open a 10 point lead. The decision to go for the 1st down deep in our own half of the field will be a hot topic for discussion for some time.

Summit regrouped after the Dover TD and drove 64 yards in 6 plays to get a 1st down at the Dover 19. The drive featured the running of O'Sullivan and Gruetzmacher as well a great catch by Johnson. Unfortunately the drive ended when Dover intercepted a Summit pass at the goal line.

Summit did not commit a single penalty, in fact there were no penalties on either side until Dover was penalized twice in the final 5 minutes of the game.
